Kingdom of Relmaur

Overview

Relmaur lay on the southern edge of Fimbrul and acts as a buffer between the dragon empires of Melabrauth and Skelkor. Relmaur is primarily a dragonborn kingdom consisting of escaped slaves and their descendants. It is a highly defensive kingdom, with all cities lying underground.   The dragonborn of Relmaur are notable for their diverse body morphologies. Wings are uncommon, but not a strange occurrence. Many dragonborn have tails, though the length can vary between one foot to six feet long. The scales on their skin also shows tremendous variation, ranging from rigid, overlapping scales like a dragon to finer scaling, resembling the soft leathery skin of a snake. Metallic scale coloration, such as silver or brass, is as common as chromatic coloring. Surprisingly, a high percentage of Relmorn dragonborn have hair on their heads like most other humanoids.

Geography

Relmaur is located in the southern, warmer slopes of the Howling Mountains range, and thus is composed by mountains covered by thick conifer forests, as well as high valleys, cliffs, rugged ravines, and waterfalls. Those places are full of wild animals such as elk, boar, wolves, and more dangerous beasts.   Until the Spellplague in 1385 DR, most of the land was full of abandoned or semi-populated stone towers to give dragons wandering the mountains something to attack. There were no roads or big settlements on the surface of Relmaur. The proper Relmorn cities where dragonborn and other humanoids lived were located underground, inside the subterranean cavern networks across the southern Howling Mountains. In the last century, with the discovery of dragonbane amber and the subsequently diminished power of dragons in the region, numerous human settlements were founded. These settlements served to provide agricultural resources, such as fur, timber, grain and livestock, to the Relmorn cities below the surface. When dragonbane amber began to disappear, dragons slowly returned to the region. Since Moonfall, most humans have been convinced to move back underground into the Relmorn Undercity.

Flora and Fauna

Surface Flora

Thick forests of spruce and pine predominate in the broad glacial valleys. Even in the thickest woods the ground is carpeted with leafy mosses and heather, and a rich variety of deciduous trees—notably birch, ash, rowan, and aspen—grow on even the steepest hillsides. Wild berries grow abundantly, including blueberries and cranberries of small size as well as yellow cloudberries, a fruit-bearing plant of the rose family.

Underdark Flora

Faezress, a magical energy found throughout the Underdark, provides the energy source for the growth of most fungi and lichens. Here is a list of many of the most important.
  • Barrelstalk is a fungus as big as a tree. Only the inner flesh is edible. In the centre there is a large reservoir containing water.
  • Bluecap is an inedible fungus, whose spores can be ground into flour and made into bread, commonly called "sporebread".
  • Firelichen of pale orangish color is used to produce a spicy paste put onto sporebread, liquor or to season soup or stew.
  • Lanterncap produces a flammable resin and are often turned upside down and lit as lanterns.
  • Ripplebark is a fungus resembling a pile of rotting flesh. It is edible raw, however after preparation it has better taste.
  • Trillimac is a fungus with broad gray-green cap and a light gray stalk. The stalk can be cleaned, soaked and dried to produce bread-like food.
  • Water orb is a bulbous fungus that grows in shallow water. It's structure is similar to sponge, soaked with water. It is edible, but rater chewy and tasteless.
  • Zurkhwood is enormous mushroom and a source of food and timber. Because of hard and woody consistency it must be properly cooked to be edible. Its spores are nutritious and may be eaten raw.

Surface Fauna

Reindeer, wolverines, lemmings, and other animals are found throughout Relmaur. Elk are common in the large coniferous forests, and red deer are numerous on the southern coast. Foxes, otters, and several species of marten, are common, and in many areas badgers and beavers thrive. Most of the rivers and lakes have a variety of fish, notably trout and salmon.

Underdark Fauna

Bats are very common in the whole of the Underdark, and includes regular, dire and even weirder species. Fish are mostly very small, pale and harmless. In greater bodies of water more dangerous versions of subterranean fish may be found, e.g. sharks. Rothé are common livestock very similar to muskoxes. They are commonly used for their meat, skin, and milk, used to make cheese. Vermin, such as worms, beetles, and crickets, are bred as livestock and turned into many processed foods.

History

This ancient dwarf civilization used to be known as Keizaal. Founded by Queen Kathatra Vesthrak.

Politics

The monarch is chosen by the priesthood when the previous monarch dies. For generations, it has followed the Vesthrak bloodline. The current monarch, Surina Prexilmorev is the first to be crowned from the Prexilmorev bloodline.

Queen Surina Prexilmorev disbanded the lords council, the Council of Five Pillars, and transitioned the government to a larger legislative body called The Senate.

Faction: Royalists

Leader: Jovadi Vertrius

Compassionate, political conservatives, the Royalists revere Relmaur's centuries-old tradition of isolationism and prioritize the safety and prosperity of the kingdom and its citizens. They are slow to trust most outsiders, especially the drow elves, but welcome immigrants of demonstrable value and refugees in considerable need. While many of this faction's members were hesitant to support the Queen's decision to dissolve of the Council of Five Pillars at first, the creation of the Senate is now widely supported. Generally, they are fiercely loyal to the Crown and consider Queen Surina Prexilmorev to be a wise and just leader.

Faction: Torchbearers

Leader: Jada Marlserpent

Considered idealistic by most, members of this political faction strive to find a means to reverse Selune's affliction or discover a permanent cure for the moon curse. To support this cause, this faction is often looking outside the kingdom for magical secrets and artifacts of great power. The Torchbearers also look to give refuge to as many good people as possible, which usually means escorting refugees into the kingdom and securing the necessary resources to support them.

Faction: Whitecloaks

Leader: Sanaar Nemonis

A nationalistic political coalition dedicated to strong military power in defense of the kingdom and in opposition to the encroaching tyranny of foreign empires. This party finds most of its support among the ranks of the military and the more religious members of society.

Faction: The Veiled

Leader: Zebeyra Arkenlyl

The drow elves have joined together in political solidarity, claiming to represent the interests of every citizen of the Undercity. Queen Surina is regarded as a hero by many drow elves, but inequality between the Five Pillars and the Undercity endangers that sentiment.

Military

Military service is not compulsory, but nearly every dragonborn citizen enlists for at least four years when they mature.

Religion

While worship of divine gods was almost unheard of on Abeir, the dragonborn of Relmaur have worshipped Bahamut since their exodus from Melabrauth. Historians are unsure how and when knowledge of Bahamut came to be found among the dragonborn there.   Until the Blue Breath of Change, the dragon empires strictly forbade worship of any entity but themselves. Dragon masters would quickly eradicate any settlement to prevent the spread of religion among their slaves. Since the Blue Breath of Change, divine worship of the gods of Toril and access to the Weave has spread across Laerakond.   The Platinum Order of Bahamut was well situated during this time to demonstrate the miracles of Bahamut to the denizens of Relmaur. As such, other religions had been slow to gain followers in Relmaur, the exception being worship of Eilistraee among the drow elves. Since Moonfall, the influx of refugees has brought more religious diversity to the kingdom.
