Fairies

"Fairies are interesting beings. I remember this one snow fairy I once met, Moth Iceshimmer. She was so tiny and covered in scars, I felt pity for her at first. She explained that she had been attacked by a group of hungry wolves. And you know what? That tiny thing wasn't even mad at them! She told me that wolves are their friends and that she understood that they were just hungry. Show me what other race would be capable of so much compassion and understanding! And she was so kind... So, to anyone reading this: Be kind to Fairies!" - Dreik Stormtracker     Fairies are small winged humanoids that possess a considerable amount of magic power. Live in tribes in nature. Although they are mostly friendly they aren’t very sociable. Characteristics of faeries depend on their habitant.   The known fairy types are:

Basic Information

Anatomy

Fairies are tiny, frail looking humanoids with spiky ears and delicate complexion. Their most prominent and recognizable charateristic however is their insect-like wings, be they membranous or butterfly like. The wings varry in shapes and colors even more than the subspacies of fairies. But mostly they stay in theme of their subspacies.

Ecology and Habitats

Fairies live in a vide spectrum of environments and have adapted to various environmental conditions. However they always stay close to nature. They tend to build small villages using materials found in the immediate vicinity and magic.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Faires adore nature and their diet consists mainly of fruits, flowers and other edible plants. But they don't shy away from eventaul hunted meat. However they don't hunt more than necessary for survival and the totality of meat is always consumed. They don't preserve meat for later either.

Behaviour

Like any race fairies have members with varying personalities but there are some traits and behaviors common among most of them
  • Playfulness: Fairies are often slightly mischievous and playful beings, enjoying games, innocent pranks, and other lighthearted activities. They may delight in tricking other races or causing harmless chaos in the natural world.
  • Connection to Nature: Fairies typically have a strong connection to the natural world, sometimes serving as guardians or protectors of forests, rivers, and other natural landscapes that they inhabit. They tend to be deeply attuned to the rhythms of nature and have a profound respect for the balance of the natural world.
  • Community: Fairies live in close-knit communities, with their own social norms, traditions, and hierarchies. They travel mostly to exchange with other communities of fairies or other races, like Snow Elves
  • Emotion and Sentimentality: Despite their mischievous tendencies, fairies are beings with deep emotions and a strong sense of loyalty to their friends and family. They may form strong bonds with other fairies and with other races, showing compassion and empathy in times of need.
  • Magic: Being naturally magical faires don't shy away from using their magic when ever they need in their everyday life.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Fairies live in tribes. Each tribe has an elder fairy which is the oldest one in tribe and oversees the good functioning of it. Different fairies have different tasks attributed to them but most are polivalent and in case of need willing to switch their tasks.    Presiding over all tribes of same subspacies are the Fairy Queens. Although she has the highest authority she doesn't intervene in everyday gestion of tribes. The queen mostly plays here role in serious international discussions or in cases of war.    Fairy Court is a group of notable fairies that surrounds the queen, they are advisors and effectives of high caliber that are deployed in case of need. Elders of each tribe officially count as part of the Fairy Court as well.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

During Age of terror and even before fairies were hunted for their Fairy Dust.   Fairy dust is given off by fairy wings naturally, but it is a very slow process. As such only fairy tribes themselves sell the dust.

Average Intelligence

On average, fairies are intelligent creatures with a keen understanding of the natural world, a deep connection to magic, and a clever and cunning nature. They exhibit problem-solving skills, creativity, and resourcefulness, particularly in situations where their magical abilities are involved.
Overall, the intelligence of fairies is on par with or exceeding that of humans, but with a unique perspective shaped by their magical nature and connection to the natural world.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Fairies are rather perceptive creatures with good eyesight and hearing which allows them to spot danger quickly.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Fairies work in tandem with nature often colaborating with its various denizens. More specifically which creatures they work with depends on the environment that they live in.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Fairies often compose their names associating them with nature, magic or traditions. Some examples would be, Lunafern, Thistlewing, Mistralis, Aurorine, Sylvanara, Sylvaine, Elowen, Liora, Thalassa or Fauna.

Average Technological Level

Being close to nature fairies tend to abstain from technological advancments. They however don't mind incorperating clever mechanisms in their everyday lives like acorn lanterns or vine pulleys.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

The main language used by all fairie tribes is Sylvan but most of them have also learnt Common.

Common Dress Code

Fairies like things adorned by nature and as such tend to incorperate nature in their own outfits and accessories.

Common Taboos

Polluting, making non-degradable constructions or in any way harming the nature is seen as a serious crime among fairies.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Fairies tend to stick to themselves. And only contact other races ocasionally and mostly only those they trust.    But there are cases like with Snow fairies and Snow Elves where they have a good lasting relationship.

Wild Shape

You can use your action to magically assume the shape of a beast that you have seen before. You can use this feature once. You regain expended use when you finish a short or long rest.
You can transform into any beast that has a challenge rating of 1/4 or lower.
You can stay in a beast shape for a number of hours equal to half your level (rounded down). You then revert to your normal form. You can revert to your normal form earlier by using a bonus action on your turn. You automatically revert if you fall unconscious, drop to 0 hit points, or die.
While you are transformed, the following rules apply:
  • Your game statistics are replaced by the statistics of the beast, but you retain your alignment, personality, and Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. You also retain all of your skill and saving throw proficiencies, in addition to gaining those of the creature. If the creature has the same proficiency as you and the bonus in its stat block is higher than yours, use the creature's bonus instead of yours. If the creature has any legendary or lair actions, you can't use them.
  • When you transform, you assume the beast's hit points and Hit Dice. When you revert to your normal form, you return to the number of hit points you had before you transformed. However, if you revert as a result of dropping to 0 hit points, any excess damage carries over to your normal form, For example, if you take 10 damage in animal form and have only 1 hit point left, you revert and take 9 damage. As long as the excess damage doesn't reduce your normal form to 0 hit points, you aren't knocked unconscious.
  • You can't cast spells, and your ability to speak or take any action that requires hands is limited to the capabilities of your beast form. Transforming doesn't break your concentration on a spell you've already cast, however, or prevent you from taking actions that are part of a spell, such as Call Lightning, that you've already cast.
  • You retain the benefit of any features from your class, race, or other source and can use them if the new form is physically capable of doing so. However, you can't use any of your special senses, such as darkvision, unless your new form also has that sense.
  • You choose whether your equipment falls to the ground in your space, merges into your new form, or is worn by it. Worn equipment functions as normal, but the DM decides whether it is practical for the new form to wear a piece of equipment, based on the creature's shape and size. Your equipment doesn't change size or shape to match the new form, and any equipment that the new form can't wear must either fall to the ground or merge with it. Equipment that merges with the form has no effect until you leave the form
Your racial wild shape merges with Druid's wildshape if you pick that class. As such it simply acts as one additional use of wildshape for druid.
