Beregost

Beregost is a large town near the intersection of the Coast Way and the Way of the Lion. It is situated between Baldur's Gate and Amn and is a popular stop for merchants traversing that busy trade route. In addition, it serves as a waypoint for most seekers approaching the fabled Candlekeep. Over the past two centuries, it has grown in significance and prosperity. While the administration of the clergy of Lathander and the stability brought by economic security have injected a foundation of benevolence and goodwill into the town, there are always elements working to undermine that in any town as large as Beregost.

Demographics

While the town is predominantly human, its proximity to Baldur's Gate and the heavy mercantile traffic have brought citizens from nearly every conceivable race to Beregost. There are neighbourhoods containing majority gnome, halfling, and dwarf populations, while the inns contain their fair share of travelling dragonborn, tieflings, and half-elves. Representatives of nearly all other races have been seen in Beregost, so it is unlikely that any random inhabitant will be shocked at the appearance of an exotic stranger wandering the streets.

Government

Reponsibility for overseeing the day-to-day administration of Beregost rests with the clergy of Lathander residing in the Song of the Morning. Governmental affairs are handled in an annex of the temple, where Dawngreeter Tholman currently presides. An elderly human, he is assisted in these duties by a recently arrived sun elf, Dawn Captain Ez’ellen Thrullan, a paladin and member of the elite Order of the Aster.

The security of Beregost is handled by a garrison of The Flaming Fist of Baldur's Gate. They are currently led by a Lieutenant Rizot. The rulers of Baldur's Gate elected to establish this permanent detachment to Beregost in the early 15th century DR to preserve its viability as a waypoint for traders approaching Baldur's Gate from Amn and to extend their sphere of influence to the south. In addition, its location near the intersection of the Coast Way and the Way of the Lion made Beregost an invaluable position for defending Candlekeep.

Industry & Trade

Imports and exports of all varieties pass through Beregost, largely between Baldur's Gate and Amn. Merchants often use Beregost as a place to exchange goods prior to resale at their final destination. Retailers in the town can make a decent profit reselling these items to merchants that don't wish to travel as far north as Baldur's Gate or south to Amn. Traders also may wish to divest overstock merchandise prior to returning home. The residents of Beregost benefit from having a diverse array of goods passing through the town and can occasionally find otherwise exotic items at reasonable rates.
