Assassin's War

Following the assassination of Ulthar III Strongborn in his palace in Gotha in 1385, High Dragon Glarthir crowned Ulthar's son Aegon II Strongborn king of the Kingdom of Gotha. Aegon suspected the Kingdom of Myrtana was behind his father's assassination. Blinded by revenge he called together the Moot. Discussion erupted between the Jarls, but eventually a majority agreed there would be war with Myrtana.   The plan was to split the Gothic army in two forces. One force, led by Aegon, his brother Berengar and Jorund Wolfheart would invade the eastern lands near Okara and Lutetia. The other force, led by Holgunn I Strongborn and Ulfric Stormcloak would take the western approach and attack Trelis. This plan of attack was built on the assumption that the Myrtanians would not expect a Gothic attack in this turmoil and would be taken by surprise.   The Myrtanians however were fully aware a Gothic invasion was at hand and had secretly mobilized their army in defense of their lands. The Eastern fortress of Trelis was defended by Sir Arthur Collmour, while the king's son Lee Lannister, would await the Gothic forces at Falcon's Keep. When the Gothic forces advanced in the west, they succeeded in sieging and conquering Trelis. In the east however, Lee met Aegon's vanguard at the Battle of Longfields and obliterated their forces. The Gothic army was routed and deeply decimated. Hearing of this defeat Holgunn and Ulfric decided to return and organize the defence of their homelands.   The Myrtanian army went in pursuit of the routing army and conquered the provinces of the Falklands, Gotha and Umbria. At Rhudaur and Whiterun their advance was halted by the rallied Gothic forces. In the defense of Whiterun, Ulfric found his death at the hands of Lee Lannister. The Myrtanians appointed a military governor and were quite content with their conquests. The Gothic Kingdom was in disarray and no new Gothic king was appointed, heralding the Kingless years. Marcus Vardenfell, who had led the retreat of forces from The Night's Watch after the Longfields, found out that he was named Lord Commander in Wolfheart's will upon returning to Castle Black.
