The Inquisitors

"Did I 'ere the Inquisitors were in town? Blimey, someones right cocked up this time..."   - Proprietor of the local Dragon's Roost in Chilken, 3 days before Inquisitors removed the Mayor for being a demon in disguise.
The organisation known as the Inquisitors serves as the Empires answer to threats beyond the pay grade of an average guard, from a Griffon stealing livestock on a local farm to an invasion of hostile spirits, Inquisitors are paid to handle threats of a more supernatural nature. To this end they receive an impressive budget from Parliament which allows them to equip their members with the latest armour and weapons, along with any other equipment or resources they may need.   The Inquisitors are led by the High Inquisitor, a position which for the last 30 years has been held by one Thaddeas Dell, who revived the order from an underpaid suicide squad into one of the The Empires most elite fighting orders. From what I have been able to determine from my limited time here, he mainly achieved this by adopting a policy of recruitment, whereby mercenary groups and adventuring parties responsible for dealing with supernatural and monstrous threats were offered impressive equipment, access to all the order's resources, and most importantly a stable paycheck, providing they gave up freelance work.   Generally Inquisitors are deployed as required throughout the Empire, and they have no permanent presence anywhere except for in Luminessa, capital of the Empire, and in Cretin's Gate, where their headquarters are located. During The Darkening, a small group of Inquisitors is sent to every major town within The Empire, in order to help deal with the increased number of threats present during this time.

Structure

The organisation is led by the High Inquistor. From there, the order generally works in teams, most often of people who worked together prior to joining up. Each of these teams usually has a designated leader, who receives orders and reports back to the High Inquisitor.

History

The Inquisitors are technically a very ancient order, dating back all the way to the original expansion of the Empire at the very start of the Noon. Somewhere along the line however they were forgotten, and were left underfunded and borderline defunct in favour of independent groups and organisations, until it was revived by its currently leader some 30 years ago.

Southern Presence

Within Mal'Haran, the Inquisitors have no jurisdiction. In fact and Inquisitor, past or present, is denied entry into the province. Instead, the Saahr uses his Honoured Guard for much the same purpose, and it is widely considered that this group is the only one on Nalan capable of matching the Inquisitors.

A Love/Hate Relationship

Although there is some animosity between independent contractors and the Inquisitors, generally being offered a position among them is a sign that a group has "made it", and is an impressive accolade, regardless of whether or not it is accepted.   As well as this, competition is widely considered to be valuable for the improvement of both parties as, especially for the Inquisitors, the desire to compete with adventuring and mercenary groups is what drove it to become one of the most respected military forces in the Empire.
