Burggraftshaft of Kernig

Kernig is the northwestern most palatinate in Wetterau, Kernig lies on the border of Frisia as well as the southern mouth of the Gutig Inlet. Its largest feature is the Westwald forest taking up much of its interior. The Westwald is not a very dense wood and is typically known as an extension of the Berkwoud to the southwest traveling into Frisia.   Kernig’s borders end to the east with the River Mitter and to the south with the Gestel Fields. Kernig’s border with Frisia to the west is extremely tenuous and there is a general mistrust on both sides of the others. As Kernig is known for it’s extremely well trained troops, Frisia is in a constant struggle to maintain its borders from the aggressive Kernig people. These border skirmishes are not sanctioned by the Stadts of Wetterau formally, but some suspect the Kaiser turns a blind eye to the events on the borders because it helps line the treasury of the Stadts of Wetterau with plunder and his close friend happens to be the Pfalzgraf of Kernig and Grand Marshall of Wetterau.   Kernig is best known for its long history of martial tradition, and the armies of Kernig are respected throughout Serrus. In addition, the unique two handed sword, the Hessen Flambarde originated here and many schools teach the Kernig Kriegschwert style to use this deadly weapon with the utmost efficiency.

Structure

This palatinate is more or less run by heads of military. Any prominent officer can acquire the title of Burggraf, or Burgrave through great soldiery. Each Burggraf sits on a ruling council and elects one of its members to serve as the head Burggraf for a term of 6 years. Typically, the head Burggraf is also the Grand Marshall of Wetterau.
