Kurfürstentum of Braulan

Braulan is known for two things, its agriculture and its fine alcoholic brews. The Gerstenland region which comprises most of Braulan is very fertile soil and much of the agricultural sustenance for the rest of Wetterau is grown here. This fertile soil also has given rise to some of the best hops on Serrus. Many microbreweries are dotted all over Braulan and good Braulan ale fetches quite the price outside of Wetterau.   In addition to the Gerstenland, Braulan’s border to the east is the Dunkelwald. This deep, thick forest separates Braulan from Ostwater. It is one of the densest and deeply foliaged forests on Serrus. Travelers and woodsmen know not to stray too far into the forest boughs as they know it is easy to become lost and disoriented in the tangled bushes and trees, never to be seen again. Individuals traveling to Ostwater avoid the wood and instead follow the southern River Mitter to the palatinate.   Lastly, Braulan also borders the Gutig Inlet to the west. It is the inlet’s innermost shore and the fishing industry is very lucrative. Coupled with the superior agriculture in Braulan, these two facets make the palatinate a valuable asset to Wetterau.

Structure

In this palatinate, the dozens of lesser nobles all vote for a single Kurfurst, or Elector to rule for a life term in Braulan. The Kurfurst acts as the head of Braulan passing laws and levying taxes. The Kurfurst can be banned from office through a government trial if he acts counter to the wishes of the nobles though. This practice has led to the lesser nobles having a tight reign on the power of the Kurfurst as well as many regular political bribes and squabbles to get the Kurfurst’s attention. The courts of Braulan are even more confusing than the other palatinates of Wetterau. Recently, the current Kurfurstin, Eleanor Von Dahmbach, seeks to defy the lesser nobles and take the palatinate back from their petty grips.
