Session 0: 2-21-24

General Summary

by Anthony Gonzalez
The session began with assisting folks with their character sheets and running through the basics of the campaign (some house rules etc.).   The game opens on a description of the Cities of Mercy and Wrath on their City Plateau in the middle of the continent, particularly the City of Wrath.   We then zoom in to the AHARRG Guild Hall where the characters are due to attend a meeting to discuss their application to the Ad Hoc Adventurers Recruitment and Resettlement Guild.   The characters run the gamut on attendance to this meeting:
  • Wynnie Bishop got there over an hour early and milled around in anxious scholar tradition.
  • Tervik Likkus was punctual to the second as all good business men are.
  • ALEK51 meant to be on time but had a Series of Unfortunate Events (tm) prevent this.
  • Kitanya Evermoon simply had to stop to grab cookies on the way and due to an unfortunate luck check had to try several stalls until she found the right ones, delaying her.
  • Num Erik Al found a bookstore and promptly forgot he had a goal.
  • L0L4 found the shopping district and quickly became polite-trapped by mall stall merchants distracting her.
Eventually, however, the party assembled on the third floor where they waited for Gleddy (and successfully avoided the distraction trap of a library, lab, and portal to an even bigger library just feet away). The waiting also included Tervik snooping around on Gleddy's desk and Wynnie investigating a magical hammer on the wall, but we don't have to tell Gleddy about that.   Despite the group not expecting a multi-person interview (and expecting an interview when there actually was none), Gleddy was pleased to welcome to the guild and grant them each their own AHARRG Guild Membership Card. She gave them a stern lecture, however, that they were now stewards of the guild and their community (all of Ostelliach) and that membership was a responsibility. (One that entailed providing comprehensive mental health counseling services, no less.)   The group introduced themselves, shared some cookies, and asked some general questions about the job (like when they got paid, the real crucial thing). Along the way, curiosity was piqued about different party members--Kitanya talks to the moon? Are boots required, and does Amanita wear them? Etc.   Gleddy told the party briefly about the mission they'd be undertaking in the morning, testing a dungeon configuration a wealthy merchant had set up to protect his spouse's valuables. Tervik passed a History check to realize he'd heard about this eccentric fellow (Zedron Eefis) in his travels and Wynnie asked Gleddy a question she probably didn't realize was personal but was all the same.   Gleddy's final instruction was for the party to spend time in the mess hall downstairs bonding with each other and getting to know their party members. She framed this as homework and bribed them with free food & drink, so the party complied.   Thanks to Tervik's sampler appetizer plates and Kitanya's (actually quite good) moscato wine, the team had no complaints about sustenance while they socialized. L0L4 kicked things off with a rousing bar song that got much of the mess hall involved and sent Amanita circling the rafters to get away from the annoyance; Amanita came back once the singing subsided, however.   Then, Tervik suggested 2 truths and a lie, and the party got to know each other through laughter and games, including tidbits like:
  • Tervik has never seen a gryphon before, let alone ridden one, but he does have a BUNCH of siblings.
  • Kitanya doesn't really get the point of 2 truths and a lie but it's the thought that counts.
  • ALEK can detach himself in "many" places and boy, is Wynnie curious about it.
  • (Mean Girls voice) You can't just ask someone what kind of mage they are.
  • Wynnie sacrificed her pinkies for magic but you can't, like, just copy her answers on the Godcrafting test for this one.
  • Num drops the most devastatingly sad bombs without blinking but, also, we got to make the pun "Numspaper" for what his reporting job is.
  In addition:
  • A bar patron took Amanita offering to eat his pinkie as flirting.
  • A gnome named Glorbus shyly, high-school-prom style, asked L0L4 for her autograph; she kindly consented.
After a few hours of socializing that even the more introverted ones seemed to enjoy, the party retired to one of the free lodgings provided by the guild. There, despite the plethora of bunk beds available, several of them (namely ALEK, Wynnie, and Kitanya) decided to make (and sleep in) a pillow fort instead.   In the morning, they'll eat a good breakfast and start their first mission!
