Trelgani Bastion of Ren

The Trelgani Bastion of Ren, or more commonly simply Ren, is a vassalized island nation off the western coast of Sinderlan that is part of The Final Kingdom. It encompasses the entirety of the Island of Ren, and is populated almost exclusively by the Giff. Founded in 8545 when the ethnonationalist faction, the Treglani, overthrew the government of the Ren Navy-Republic amidst the Quake War, the state is extremely isolationist and strictly regulates the movement of people and goods across its borders. Its culture places scientific advancement as a moral imperative, with a primary focus in advancing military technologies. Magic, while still common amongst the populace, is frowned upon outside of extenuating circumstances.   The state became a vassal state of The Final Kingdom in in 8984 when the Queen of Clasped Hands negotiated its inclusion in secret. It is entirely unknown how this was done without bloodshed. Despite its inclusion in the Kingdom, the borders of the island remain tightly regulated. As part of its vassal status, a small number of firearms are permitted to be distributed amongst the most elite members of The Monarch's Bulwark and various divisions of the Kingdom Armed Forces. Despite, the restrictions, many wealthy individuals and groups have managed to procure firearms at great cost without authorization of Ren regulators, much to their frustration.

Founding

In 8540, the Ren Navy-Republic, the ruling government of the islands of Ren and Ptologius, suspected the theft of firearm technology by Kingdom spies. They delcared war, beginning the Quake War. Amidst the chaos of war, a faction of ethnonationalist Giff led by Phocas Trelganus began fomenting dissent amongst the populace. His message, centered around the weakness of the Republic, resonated with the citizens of the+ Navy-Republic, which was long-plagued by corruption, instability, and inequality. They believed the war could not be won by such a weak government, and advocated for a full overhaul of the culture of Ren.   In 8545 the faction, now called the Trelgani, staged a coup of the Republic, executing the Senate and the Minister. The branches of government were dissolved and were fully taken over by the Office of the Navy, effectively declaring permanent martial control over society. Phocas Trelganus was placed as Supreme Commander of the Military, with the new title of Autarch. All private industry was seized by the military and every non-Giff was forcibly expelled from the island.   While the coup and restructuring of society on the islands led to near-instant stablization, the war took a turn when The Monarch's Bulwark broke the seige of Dytestab and caused the destruction of a large Ren fleet. Autarch Trelganus ordered an end to the hostilities in 8547, citing the war as a mistake from a corrupt impure administration. The Treaty of Dytstab recognized the new government and established its control over the Regalia Corridor. After the recall of the Ren troops behind their borders, the island began a hostile isolation policy, firing upon any unauthorized vessels entering its waters with highly advanced firearms. The next four centuries of Ren history were shrouded in mystery to outsiders.

Centuries of Isolation and Vassalization

After the western Kingdom recovered from the destruction from the Quake War, navies from both the Kingdom and Didacian Consulate began sailing through the Regalia Corridor once again with the approval of the Ren military. While approach to the island of Ren was strictly prohibited by the Ren Defense Fleet, many navigators reported seeing immense clouds of haze and smog on the horizon to the west while passing the region. Rumors began to swirl about the state of Ren, some even stating that it had been destroyed and the Giff were simply sailing the seas of its former location in perpetural exile.   Eventually, Giff began appearing in Sinderlan society claiming to be refugees from the island, claiming the island had been dominated by a domineering and cruel government. Tales began to circulate about the 80,000 square mile island being entirely covered in a dense cityscape, a population numbering in the billions, with a density unable to be comprehended by outsiders. Firearms, incredbly common on the island, were claimed to be the leading cause of death in a smog-covered mega city. These tales led many to attempt to make landfall at the island, resulting in hundreds of deaths at the hands of the Defense Fleet.   The rumors and tales persisted for centuries, building an air of mystery and curiosity as to the strange societ that had been formed. In 8984, at the peak of the craze in interest in the island, the King of Clasped Hands supririsingly announced that the state of Ren would become a vassal state of the Final Kingdom. While it would be technically a part of the Kingdom, it would remain mostly fully automous, unlike the various Duchies. In addition, firearms were legalized as a limited resource to be supplied to the Kingdom's armed forces. This politcal move surprised many, leading several to question exactly how the King managed to negotiate such terms, which remains a state secret by both nations. It is unknown how this action was receieved by the citizens of Ren, though Giff are rarely observed to be benefitting from the Gift of the Throne.   Almost immediately, a small compound on Ren was designated as a docking area for authorized shipping vessels. While they were restricted to the compound while on the island, the Kingdom citizens and merchants that were allowed to dock became the first to witness the state of the island. They reported that they saw an immense city spanning the entire horizon with spire structures of stone and concrete reaching into the sky, plazas with thousands of Giff, mechanical wonders rivaling the Warforged in advancement, and firearms being wielded by virtually every person.   Additionally, a relaxation of standards in what citizens were allowed to leave the island became apparent when Giff mercenaries wielding firearms began appearing across Sinderlan and later even Pillarin. They claimed to still be loyal to the Autarch, and simply had been given authorization to leave. Rumors began to circulate that they had been dispatched to hunt down the refugees of years' past.   While the circulation of firearms became legal for Kingdom military officials, many firearms began circulating elsewhere in circles of the wealthy aristocrats and criminal underground organziations. Even more alarmingly to the Ren government, smuggles have apparently been able to secure shipments of firearms from the island itself using falsified credentials. This has apparently led to tensions in the mid 91st century between Autarch Gladius Clorel and the various Duchies of the Kingdom responsible for such transaction.
