OttD Session 10: A tale of two Gods
General Summary
Pestle, Tornac, and Vun Roade are on board Penguin's ship, The Crescendo. They engage in some light banter while Penguin gives them safety instructions. During this, Penguin spends a little time describing Sconce's strange obsession with death, and his former affiliation to The Raven Queen. Pestle talks to the goat, but learns nothing noteworthy.
Meanwhile Zerrof, having just finished the meditation he began in Session 9: Assault on The Window, emerges from a sensory deprivation chamber to find he is being guarded by Zorkul Clalthicul, who appears to have not slept in the entire time. Zorkul Clalthicul fills him on on the attack, and Zerrof quickly concludes the attacker was a primordial of some sort.
Zorkul Clalthicul goes to bed, and Zerrof follows, intent on guarding him in his sleep. He is interrupted however when he sees Pixo arguing with 30-something Kenku. When asked about this, Pixo first responds in sign language. After he realizes Zerrof does not understand, he follows up by saying he needs to build a church for Penguin. He presents Zerrof with a large sealed scroll to deliver in person, and roughly shoves him through a doorway to Avernus.
The rest of the party, still bantering with Penguin on The Crescendo, hear about this event and turn around to pick up their remaining party member. Meanwhile, Izzik arrives to help Zerrof pass through the gates. Shortly after entering Avernus proper, there is an earthquake and a large pillar of flames which Izzik identifies as coming from Tiamat, still chained up in a crater. He then proceeds to the River Styx, where the others pick him up and bring him onboard The Crescendo.
The Celestial/Murderers, now reunited, proceed to banter and catch up with each other while Penguin reads the message from Pixo. After some time, Penguin reveals that Pixo intends to construct a church in his name, and expresses concern that this action would be premature.
The discussion is interrupted, however, when the River Styx turns hostile and attempts to sink their ship. A skill challenge ensues, which the party succeeds at handily. Most notably, Tornac concludes the challenge by challenging the river to a drinking contest, in which he chugs an entire gallon of wine. After the excitement is over, Penguin begins a sizable exposition dump.
He talks about The four curses of the Kenku, and also his plot to become a god by overthrowing Zariel. After extended discussion, Zerrof volunteers his assistance purely on the grounds that it is the right thing to do. Vun Roade agrees to assist on the grounds that he is given means to slay the orcs who destroyed his village, and formalizes this with Penguin by swearing on The Negotiator. Pestle requests Foresight, but Penguin cannot promise to deliver that without consulting with some experts in Dis.
Party members also take this opportunity to exchange backstories. Pestle describes how he was once a sacred tree in Rainy Grove, and then given life anew by the dwarves after his tree was chopped down. Zerrof talks about the destruction of Neprius. Vun Roade talks about the destruction of his village at the hands of orcs, and his history as a blacksmith.
The session concludes as the group arrives in the city, and dock behind a fancy beach house owned by Penguin .
