OttD Session 24: Surgeons and Unicorns
General Summary
The party is still celebrating at The Clever Needlefish. Thulmir is off at the bathroom, and Adoven Woodsoul is gloating to random bar-goers about his hydra-slaying prowess.
Penguin sets about attempting to get the others to sign deals with him. He first attempts to gain non-aggression treaties, but the party is reluctant to concede to this and repels multiple offers, including vengeance for Vun Roade and gardening work for Pestle. Eventually, however, he gets both Pestle and Vun Roade to sign 3-month mercenary contracts for 20K gold each. Zerrof rebuffs all attempts at such things, but Penguin eventually acquiesces, seemingly confident that the people he did get could take him in a fight.
As for the others, he plans to try and get Adoven Woodsoul to write a book, Tornac has already sworn himself into his service, and Thulmir never did come back from that bathroom, so he openly states he intends to turn him in for that 100,000 platinum bounty.
The party then debates this for a while, and are somewhat receptive. Pestle goes out into the bar and talks to the Modron barkeep only to discover that Thulmir has in fact left the bar entirely. In response, Penguin pulls out the scrying orb he stole from Polaris in Session 7: You have my attention. Instead of the dwarf they were expecting, however, they see a halfling wielding a bloody scalpel over the corpse of Zorkul Clalthicul.
Penguin casts dimension door several times to bring himself and Tornac to confront The Drunken Surgeon. Tornac engages in combat immediately.
Pestle turns into a giant eagle and carries both Zerrof and Vun Roade back to the courthouse to join in combat. Adoven Woodsoul meanwhile, having only just joined the call, looks to see his companions charging off somewhere. He considers this, briefly, and then promptly returns to the bar to drink some more.
As The Drunken Surgeon gets ganged up on, he flees the scene and runs into the courthouse. The party gives chase, which rolls into a skill challenge. What follows is a flurry of terrible rolls, and The Drunken Surgeon escapes again.
Afterwards, the party regroups around the corpse. Izzik finds Adoven Woodsoul in the bar and explains to him what is going on, so he joins with the rest of the party also, albeit very drunk. Penguin gets some bearded devils to help him remove the body, and tells the party to meet him back in Kilead.
The party references Tikipedia to make their way back to sigil and from there to Kilead. They arrive inside an old gnome's basement, and proceed to frighten the poor man to the point he wets himself and runs away. They then proceed to The Cobalt Sanctuary, where they talk with Penguin inside Zorkul Clalthicul's office. Knowledge of his death is not yet public, but a funeral should come within a day or two and he has already been buried in the monastery courtyard.
Zerrof is tired of waiting around. He wants to take action, and Penguin agrees. He is going to begin the attack in 48 hours. The party discusses several options for how to spend the intervening time, but ultimately they choose to go to the Feywild to attempt to persuade Corellon Larethian to their cause. Adoven Woodsoul rolls to see if he knows anyone in the feywild and gets a 21, so he recalls a night out drinking with a satyr that turns out to be an Archfey. Pestle, meanwhile, has connections of his own and takes the party to go meet him.
They travel to his hut in Rainy Grove, and meet Izar, the unicorn who has been guarding the grove in Pestle's absence. Izar has made some changes while Pestle was gone, though, having created a perfectly triangular lake that is 10 feet on each side and also 10 feet deep. The party finds him in a canoe in the middle of the lake wearing a paper pirate hat. The canoe has also had a navigation wheel bolted onto the front, which does not really fit and throws the entire thing off balance.
Shenanigans ensue. Izar reveals that he has dreams of becoming a pirate, but he does not know any sea shanties and also can't swim. He also says that there was a satyr who came by every now and again from inside of the lake. Zerrof investigates this and promptly discovers that the lake is actually a portal to the Feywild.
While this is happening, the party interrogates Izar about this man in the lake. He has supposedly been borrowing Pestle's shack on occasion to "teach entry courses", so Pestle spends the remainder of the conversation frantically cleaning. Apparently this man is actually Kaiser, the satyr they met in The Beastlands who they suspect to be an agent of Vecna. They also persuade Izar to take them to the Feywild and lead an expedition to meet Corellon Larethian. The session ends as the party swims through the lake to visit the Feywild.
