Karu lost his parents to illness as a baby, leaving his older brother, Sosuke, to take care of him. Despite the fact that they struggled between raising a child on their own and working to keep food on the table, Sosuke did a reasonable job with Karu until he was old enough to be left in the care of others within Kusagakure. During the time that he raised his baby brother, there would be many trials and errors along the way. Even though Karu had been exposed to some things a child should not, he has nothing but the utmost respect for Sosuke and is a seemingly happy young boy with a fascination for beating up bad guys.
In the year 195, Karu met a kunoichi named Shiro who had been substituting for the day care. His immediate thoughts were that she looked pretty and nice, causing him to speak to her. As they spent time together, they got along well enough for the boy to ask for Shiro if she would teach him how to play shogi because he kept losing to another girl at the day care which upset him. After spending the better part of an hour trying to show him how to properly play, it would be revealed to both Shiro, her associate and Karu that his brother would not be returning from their mission yet again, marking nearly a month since Sosuke last left Kusagakure. It took some convincing, but eventually Karu managed to win over Shiro as she reluctantly waited for him to return to her apartment with him. Since then, Karu has been enduring physical and mental training as often as possible during Shiro's down time between missions, looking up to her as a role model and sensei.
