Session 1 Notes
Recorded September 2, 2023
General Summary
- We started with a cinematic that shows a 1920 cityscape, with tall buildings, covered in deep snow.
- The view singles out a hotel, we enter the building, move down a hallway, to in front of a door.
- The Adventure begins. We all travel to Lima, Peru, to meet with Explorer Augustus Larkin.
- We come up on a scene in a restaurant (Bar Cordano), a dinner hosted by Augustus Larkin.
- The whole party is there, in a warm and welcoming atmosphere, delicious smells of food wafting about.
- Augustus Larkin is of average height, but thin, wearing a light colored linen suit.
- He is flanked by a wild looking, tanned, individual who doesn't seem to speak much, stands behind Larkin in a very protective manner. (Luis de Mendoza)
- There is another man at the opposite end of the table, a black gentleman, who is wearing a tweed suit and smokes a pipe.
- He is a rather pleasant individual, smiles and laughs at what people are saying.
- He was introduced as Jesse Hughes.
- Larkin welcomes us and tells us that he has learned of a lost site that was discovered in the Andes mountains.
- He ran across an individual that had some items, the value of which he did not know, and using those items he has determined the location of this lost site.
- He begins to show us some items that he pulls out of a bag.
- The first thing he shows us is a golden cup, inlaid with some jade (?) (Larkin's Cup)
- He then shows us a amulet that gleams golden and appears to be a depiction of a humanoid figure, dressed in ceremonial garb carrying what looks like ceremonial staves. (Larkin's Pendant)
- Borislav knows that they are old and valuable.
- Smallberries knows that they are peruvian.
- Nigel looks at them both and knows that the cup is incan, a local find, probable from the 15th century. The pendant is Tiwanaku, another local find, but this would put the find as something from the 5th century.
- A german archeologist Max Uhle did some extensive research on the Tiwanaku people and discovered several things in the Andes mount.
- Both Cillian and Nigel notice that Larkin has over indulged in cologne before arriving. Nigel believes it to be an expensive brand to use to such excess.
- Larkin says that he wanted to give us the weekend in Lima, he has reserved rooms at the Hotel Maury for us, and then he wants to get underway first thing Monday morning.
- Meet at the Hotel España, get into a bunch of trucks, and then head out into the jungle.
- He keeps coughing…. Seems kind of sickly.
- He says, when asked, that the cough is a side effect of a bout of malaria.
- Doc, seems to think that there are other things going on, it is more likely that it is currently something that he is dealing with.
- He says, when asked, that the cough is a side effect of a bout of malaria.
- At this point, Jesse points at Larkin with his pipe and asks if he could tell us exactly where the site is.
- Four days travel from the village of Puno.
- When Jesse did this the silent man leans forward as if that he took that as a threat.
- Cillian also notices that the a guy in the far upper right corner of the room. He doesn't seem to be doing anything in particular. He has a drink, but he isn't drinking the drink. He is white, stands out a bit. (see Mystery Man)
- Ultimately Larkin excuses himself from the table at about 9 pm.
- Doc does offer to examine him before we leave and Larkin puts him off.
- Doc notices that Larkin may be suffering from withdrawal. Doc also noticed the overuse of cologne by Larkin.
- Doc does offer to examine him before we leave and Larkin puts him off.
- Just as a side note these characters have succeeded on the following skills for advancement:
- Floyd: Medicine and Spot Hidden
- Cillian: Spot Hidden
- Nigel: Archaeology
- Jesse tells us that he has been in Lima about a day before us and he has heard stories from around about how Larkin came into possession of the items.
- He says that his story, about finding this random shepherd in the foothills that had these items, and had a location, just doesn't add up.
- Jesse says that he could use our help looking into what is really going on.
- He says his name is actually Jackson Elias.
- We know that Jackson Elias is a well known book that was published in 1918 called sons of death.
- Elias actually infiltrated the cults of modern day India. He wrote a very good piece on what the Thugees are up to.
- He also wrote a book about the witch cults of England.
- His work focuses on operating cults. He has been all over including India, England, and Central America.
- He says his name is actually Jackson Elias.
- He says that Larkin may be implicated in something that the de Mendoza character was involved in.
- He says there have been a rash of mysterious deaths in Puno.
- He says that he has been to see a Professor, Nemesio Sánchez an Archaeologist, at the University of San Marcos.
- He has spoken with the Professor and Larkin refuses to speak with him. The professor wants to go on the expedition, but Larkin will not speak with him.
- He will be meeting with the Professor tomorrow morning to try and learn more about the region and the proposed expedition.
- Nigel, Doc, Borislav, and Father Fury all agree to accompany Jesse to see the professor just after lunch tomorrow. (March 19, 1921)
- Cillian, Mickey, Smallberries, and Albert are going to try and go acquire additional firearms.
- Cillian notices the weird guy in the corner leave about the same time that Jesse left.
- He and Father Fury all leave near at the same time and Cillian tries to follow this guy.
- Cillian follows the guy up until there is a point where he stops following Jesse and ducks down an alley.
- Cillian looks down the alley and isn't really able to see anything.
- Cillian catches up to Jesse and fills him in on the fact that he was being followed.
- He loops back to the restaurant to pick up Mickey and most of the party leaves to head to the hotel for the night.
- Smallberries goes to the movie set to try and get some additional weapons, in the middle night, and is stymied by the night watchman.
- Moving to plan B, smallberries scouts the area around the hotel early in the morning and is able to find a store that outfits hunting expeditions.
- Securing the location, group A heads there in the morning and procures more weapons.
- Cillian also procures generic expedition gear.
- Switching gears we move over to the group that was heading to see the professor, Hughes/Elias shows up promptly at noon and escorts us over to the Museo de Arqueolgía y Antropología.
- He leads us to the research facility there that is dedicated to anthropology and archaeology.
- Jesse leaves for a few minutes when we first arrive, but returns with the professor. We head to a large room with bookshelves lining the walls and several large tables.
- We begin to discuss the expedition and how Larkin has been stonewalling him out of the process of the expedition.
- He tells us that he has been trying to find the location of the temple that Larkin is trying to reach so that he can get there before Larkin to prevent him from stealing the cultural treasures contained there in.
- One of his assistants has been trying to translate a manuscript that may help lead to the temple and she has also mentioned a relic that may provide some insight as well.
- We spend sometime discussing how we wish to deal with the situation at hand. Deciding to try and keep a watch on the expedition to prevent underhanded dealings.
- The professor looks at the door as if expecting someone, probably his assistant.
- We ask about his assistant and if we should go look for her and he suggests perhaps that we could go look for her.... but he does not appear to want to accompany us.
- We don't get the impression that he is nervous or acting suspiciously, but he thinks that it would be helpful for us to go look for.
- We head out of the meeting room toward the door and down into the archives.
- Borislav looks into the poorly lit basement, sporadically placed aged lightbulbs provide disconnected pools of light that do very little to light this dark place.
- We ended the session there.
- The first thing we need to do at the beginning of the next session is to roll to see if we recover any luck
Session 1:
You Meet in a Tavern...
A Cinematic opening shot. Camera shot dropping down from the clouds to an aerial approach to a major city skyline in the mid 1920s. Snow covered city streets between towering buildings. People, horses, autos... all struggle about their daily lives. Massive walls of buildings stand ten stories tall. An awning covers the entrance. Only the word, "HOTEL," shows before moving inside the building. A uniformed man closes the door as the view passes into a lobby busy with activity. Welcome into the elevator, doors closing. The doors open to a carpeted hallway leading to an open corridor. Identical number doors line the hallway. Approaching one particular door the numbers begin to come into focus. A knock is heard... Fade to black.
