Sanctuary (ˈsæŋktʃuəri)

Sanctuary is a small colony town located in the region of Lethe. It is the home of roughly 2,100 citizens, and sits at the mouth of the river Lucent right on the edge of the sea. Despite its exposed location, the small settlement seems to thrive in relative safety, unbothered by threats or predators.   Functioning as a safe haven for those who find themselves stranded with no memories on Auberon , Sanctuary's native citizens are friendly and hospitable. They have set up a Welcome Centre in the Grand Sanctum Square , where newcomers are guided as they first arrive in order to get registered and settled in.

Demographics

Despite its small size, Sanctuary provides a home to a vast number of different creatures from all across known reality. A majority, though not all, are humanoid in shape. While the settlement is built for “normal sized" people with some accommodations made for larger and smaller creatures, all denizens find that their homes suit them perfectly. In this city, mythological creatures live wall to wall with demons, cryptids, cyborgs, and ordinary humans. However, the settlement completely lacks children and teenagers.

Government

The town is governed by a system of departments. Command oversees all decisions affecting the daily life and future of Sanctuary and its citizens. Comprised of the heads of all other departments, Command provides structure to the lives of the colonists by assigning missions that need to be accomplished for the happy continuation of the town. The other departments have their own areas of expertise and responsibility, ensuring that life runs smoothly and that all are provided for.

Industry & Trade

Sanctuary functions on a kind of stamp card economy. If an individual shows up to their assigned jobs they are rewarded with enough stamps to acquire the basics of life. Therefore, much of the extraneous trade of commodities relies on a barter system between individuals.

Infrastructure

Sanctuary strives to be self-sustaining, and as such has worked hard to be able to provide for its citizens. Sustainable energy sources keep the lights on, with Research & Development constantly striving to find new ways to improve on what they have to work with. The city has its own working sewers system as well as a working power grid - even its own radio channel! A lot of what a modern person would expect to find is available within the town's parametres.   Technology levels between the community and the R&D department are vast. There are no cars in Sanctuary due to its limited size and, due to the power, Sanctuary citizens have access to landline telephones and radio stations. Within R&D the technology is at a far more advanced level, holographics and other post-modern tech are available to those with the right classifications.

Districts

Twilight District

The Twilight District is located in the south-east part of town, stretching from the farmlands in the south-east to the banks of river Lucent in the west. Its northern-most limits are the Grand Sanctum Square, where it borders Dawndocks district. The square is home to numerous official shops and storefronts, such as the Commissary, a number of clothes shops, and other stores providing essential goods. In the centre of the square, there is also a Welcome Centre for new arrivals.   In the east parts of the Twilight District is the Tranquil Valley Memorial Institute , where Sanctuarians can go to mend their wounds and seek advice from professionals. Just adjacent to the hospital is Hospital Campus which houses Sanctuary's research laboratories, where scientists of all creeds are continuously discovering new and exciting things about our planet and its lifeforms.   Most of Sanctuary's governing bodies call the Twilight District their home.

Sunstrand

Sunstrand is located in the south-west part of Sanctuary, straddling the west bank of Lucent. Sunstrand is primarily a residential district, though it houses Sanctuary's one theatre, The Aeon Theatre . It's also home to The Wry Cast, a popular local hangout and pub.

Duskdocks

Duskdocks is located in the north-west part of Sanctuary and is the smallest district. The Night Market is open only during the evening and night, and many merchant stalls can be found here. These sell knick-knack items, homemade goods, trinkets, and more. Citizens are welcome to bring out their own goods!   In the south of Duskdocks lays Lovers' Square, a peaceful gardenscape that many residents go to in order to relax and unwind with nature. In the middle is a large fountain feature with a collection of different coins at the bottom, signifying wishes for good fortune. Bordering Lovers' Square is also Nightfall Library and the Sanctuary Archives, which both offer up their shelves upon shelves of volumes to those that seek them out. Just beyond Lover's Square is Lovers' Bridge, a cobblestone bridge that connects Duskdocks and the Twilight District.

Dawndocks

Dawndocks is located in the north-east part of Sanctuary. While mostly residential, it sports and impressive dockside that then extends into a beachside walking path. Of interest is the Sanctuary Security Station, home of the Security department and functionally a police station. The district is also home to The Drunken Harp, a bar-turned-club focused around music and dance. Among the calmer residential streets, one can also find the Hallowed Grounds, a cozy café famous for its coffee drinks.

Climate

Auberon has four seasons, though they are not of equal length. Spring and Autumn linger for a great length of time, while Summer and Winter are short flashes by comparison. This results in a rather temperate climate in the area in which Sanctuary is situated with temperatures not reaching below -10 C and not climbing above 30 C.   Sanctuary is a very humid, wet place. Precipitation levels are high with it seeming to rain on more days than it doesn’t. As a result, fungi, mould, and even moss seek to colonise every single surface available to them in beautiful and frustrating patterns. They can interfere with machinery, lighting, and at times, the very health of the colonists themselves. Some colonists who aren’t careful to keep their living spaces free of these interlopers tend to develop a persistent cough and sometimes find themselves the subject of enthusiastic colonization.
