Magic Wielders

Written by Drackzahn With ideas from Volt, Goldie, Drackzahn

Most species call it magic and those that can wield it magic wielders. We angels simply know it as wielding soul energy, either in pure or in corrupted form.
A magic wielder is a person that can either use their own Soul energy, or the corrupting energies of the Pink Mist to alternate reality in small or bigger ways. Depending on the exact source of their abilities, we differentiate them and give these groups names. The way how they use their powers also differs depending on the category. A single person can be part of several of these groups at once, or none at all. Not all of them wield their magic voluntarily. In cases where it is harmful, it can be called a curse instead of a gift for them.   It is common to call magic wielders mages, or witches or to misuse certain identifiers, especially for commoners and simple folk or people who have not much contact with magic in their lives. The term "Mage" can be used for all magic wielders in general.

Magister

Magic is nothing that only a few chosen ones can use. Many of you have what it needs in you, buried! You just need to learn how to bring it to the surface and how to use this force in a controlled way.
The source of magic for a magister is the environment around them. They only need a tiny amount of their own soul energy and the knowledge of how to use it to cast their magic. This makes them heavily dependent on magic around them, most often Pink Mist. Many inhabitants of Bardor have what it takes to become a Magister, even if many never use this chance. On Earth, there are only very few who have a tiny little bit of potential to become a Magister, mostly as the pink mist infusion of the planet is near non-existent and so are the infusions of the inhabitants, flora and fauna. Magisters rely on invocations, runes, and spells to cast their magic. A mix of dedication, training, and natural talent is very important. Magisters have no inherited knowledge and no god-given feeling for their abilities, but instead learn them from either books, masters, or in schools of their nation. There exist many different schools of magic. Some are well spread through many nations, while others are a guarded secret of a single nation and its Magisters. There exists also schools of magic that are forbidden to use in most civilized areas, like Necromancy, while other schools are nearly forgotten like Golemancy. Most Magisters will concentrate on a single, or at most two schools of magic, especially if they are of a species that has a more limited lifespan like Humans.

Ranks

My studies are purely academic in nature. Why should I risk my life by leaving the academy?
Due to the learning process and years of experience required to master the ability to activate the magic with their own soul energy and then increase the strength of the spell by pulling in pink mist energies of the environment around them, you can classify Magisters in different levels. A master or teacher of magic can be a Magister or Archmagister. Novice masters or teachers are rare and of low quality, as they have not truly understood magic themselves. These ranks are the most commonly used for most magic schools of Bardor and beyond. Several nations and organizations uses either other names for them, or have a different ranking system for the magisters.

Ignorami

All who are able to wield magic as a potential Magister, but never have learned how. Many of them are either not fully aware of their skills or are self-learned individuals who never truly visited one of the schools or masters. Most Ignorami will never climb the stairs of a Magister career due to their own personal wealth, or missing out the opportunities. It is common that they are able to cast one or two simple spells that they learned or taught themselves, like creating sparks to light a fire.

Novice

Those who successfully entered a school of magic or are beginning their studies with a master's are called novices. They become more powerful each year in learning and widen their spell variety more and more. The learning process differs heavily in time, depending on the nation, regional traditions, the school, the personal skills, and the master. Most Novices learn for around 5 years before they officially are recognized as Magister. Exceptions exist and can push the time required either lower, due to exceptional skills or talent, or increase the time due to laziness or because the Novice chose an especially hard school of magic to learn.

Magister

A fully-fledged Magister has mastered their school of magic and has a wide variety of spells at their disposal. They are powerful in their variety and their academic background, as they fully understand the logic behind magic and the fundamental laws of it. After their education period, Magister has a variety of possibilities depending on their background and the nation they live in. Typically paths that many magisters chose are:
  • Returning to their home village/town and improving the lives of their family and friends
  • Serving in the ranks of their nation as state magisters, teachers, or court wizards
  • Entering the military path and serving in an army or mercenary guild as battle mages, backline supporters, or magical knights
  • Travelling the world to deepen their knowledge and learn more about the world
  • Living as an adventeror
The exact paths and how they turn out for the magister vary heavily depending on their school of magic as well as the nation they live in. Most Magisters stay on this rank for their whole life.

Archmagister

The rank of Archmagister is hard to climb as it requires one to become a true master of their school of magic. Most Archmagisters have created their own new spells, runes, invocations or developed their school of magic in a different way further. An Archmagister is a force of nature and will receive the respect of most around them. Most nations have only very few of them in their ranks, some even none at all. They are valuable enough to offer them noble titles or land in exchange for their lifetime services to a nation. Many Archmagisters will begin teaching at a school for magic or serve a nation in a high rank such as the royal court wizard.

Schools of Magic

Academic magic knows many schools of magic that differ heavily in their spells, ways to handle the magic, and purpose. Most schools were found during ancient times, while some only appeared in recent centuries or even decades. It is not unlikely that two schools have overlapping abilities and fields of application.

Warlock

My magic, my power is not my own. It is borrowed from my patron, to which I am eternally grateful that she offered me the chance that I took.
Warlocks wield magic that is not their own but instead depend on a patron and its magical powers. Most patrons form pacts with their warlocks, allowing them to wield their magic in exchange for something. Depending on the patron, this exchange can be servitude, payment in any form, or simply cooperation. Warlocks depend on their pact and must ensure that they keep their side of it to not lose their abilities. The exact type of magic they can wield and how they wield it depends heavily on their patron. Warlocks are limited to the magic of their patron and can't learn new spells or magic on their own with only the pact as the source. Some pacts are made without knowledge of the warlock and not all pacts are beneficial for the warlock. Magic can be a curse as much as it is a blessing for the wielder. Trickster patrons may form a pact without proper agreement with their warlock and infuse them with their magic against their will.

Categories

We differentiate Warlocks into categories, depending on the type of pact and the type of patron they have. The categorization is not absolute and a patron may be part of several categories at once or fit none at all.

Cleric

My goddess is with me and by her will, I wield my divine magic!
One of the most spread types of Warlocks is those that service a God or Goddess. We call such divine warlocks clerics or priests. They receive their magic in exchange for their faith, their prayers, and their devotion to their goddess. The type of magic that a cleric can wield is called a domain and relies fully on the domain of the god they serve. Most clerics enjoy a life of plenty by the blessing of their god, but only as long as they follow their god's will. The divine magic of a god can be earned as quickly as it can be lost.

Caudian

I hear her voice! Always! There is no escape. She wants me to go out and balloon people in her magical spheres. And with each of her whispers, my will against it weakens.
A Caudian is a being that had the luck, or unlucky, to Merge with a lost soul, also called Naaby. A Caudian is created when a lost soul merges with a body that already contains a soul, like a person or an animal. The lost soul is then called a Naaby and becomes permanently linked to the soul of the body. The two become connected and their fates become one. This connection can't be broken and the death of one is the death of the other. A Caudian wields incredible powers, often in the form of a magical body part such as a tail, or hair. Caudians always hear the voice of their Naaby as they are one being and the two must cooperate to wield their magic together. Neither of the two sides is in full control alone and neither can cast the magic without the other side's agreement. In times when one of the two is weak, the other side may take over control, but this is only temporary, like when the Caudian is sleeping and the Naaby takes control of the body alone. When Caudian and Naaby work together in harmony, they can become an incredibly strong duo and powerful in their own way, but if they fight against each other, it can cripple them heavily.

Fiend

You forget a tiny little detail here my dear friend. I OWN YOU! Your soul is mine and it is my decision how much of my magic you wield. So be sure to uphold your side of our little contract, or I will collect your soul long before its due time.
Demonic species such as Devils, Succubi, or Lilims sometimes offer their magic in exchange for contracts or pacts. Especially the Devils are known for their contracts that often have details buried in the fine print. Not all contracts with demonic species are of bad nature and some are very beneficial for the warlock, especially those with Succubi. Depending on the culture and nation, Fiends are outcasts and seen as something dangerous. Most fiends will hold the source of their magic a secret or lie that they have a different kind of patron. Most demonic patrons want the soul of their warlock in return for borrowing their magic. Devils most often will want the soul for serfdom, while most succubi want them either as a member of their harem or to become a future succubi daughter/son. Lilims on the other side are more sneaky in their pacts, often concealing their true nature in dreams or masking themselves as gods. In exchange for their abilities, most Fiends pay with their dreams and their free will as Lilims are masters of manipulation.

Thaumaturge

Warlocks that form pacts with a magical being of nature are generally referred to as Thaumaturge. The variety of such magical beings is huge and heavily changes the nature of these pacts. Such a pact may be such a Butterflygirl from Lake Blauauge, which results in a rather casual pact that remembers more of friends with benefits than a strict contract. Most warlocks fall into this category.

Wiccan

I am my own master and I don't depend on things like magic stones or mana of nature. My magic is raw and pure.
The most pure mages are the Wiccan. They are a force of nature and potentially the strongest magic wielders known. Wiccan are the only ones that can ascend to Godhood, as they are the only ones that pull their magic power from their own soul energy. Most Wiccan come from magical species such as Balloon Foxes, Fairies or Rubber Genies. Many of the more advanced Golem species are Wiccan as well. In rare cases, an infusion such as the Pink Mist one can transform you into a Wiccan even without the magical genes of a typical magical species. Wiccan can become the patron of a warlock.   Wiccan are limited in their magic abilities and can't learn fully new magic, but only learn to control their very own magic better. Magic of Wiccans can rarely be categorized into the typical magic schools of the Magisters. The magic of a Wiccan comes from themselves, but many are able to restore their own batteries by absorbing energy from the environment, many directly from Pink Mist. A Wiccan who has honed their abilities and becomes a true master of them is vastly more powerful than Warlocks or Magisters with similar skills, simply as they are full masters of them and of the energy source for their magic. They do not need to learn their basic abilities, but instead have a natural feeling for them. Magic is not something academic with complex spells, prayers, or math, but as simple as breathing for most of them. To master their abilities, they often require time and self-training nevertheless. Not all Wiccan benefit purely from their own magic thought. Some would describe it more as a curse than a blessing, especially if they are not able to fully control or understand their own abilities and magic.

Artificer

Without your magical sword you are defenseless! You are not truly a magical knight!
Artificers are not magical on their own but use magical items instead to cast magic. Most common are Magitech items or Item-Golems like Sai. They do not learn spells, but instead learn to use their items or their golem friend. Most "true" mages have a rather cold opinion about Artificer, but in terms of raw power, the only limit for the Artificier is their item. Legendary items can easily catapult the user into the power levels of an Archmagister. This is also their biggest weakness though, as if they lose access to their magical items, they become nothing more than non-mages. Most artificers are also able to cast magic as a Magister, Warlock, or Wiccan additionally, as many magitech items require the insertion of tiny amounts of magic to work. Depending on the magic item, it may be easy to learn or extremely hard to control. Each magical item is different in its strength, power, abilities, and difficulty of usage, which makes it hard to predict what kind of magic an Artificer can wield with their items.
