The Western Plains
The Western Plains, once known as the Reynolds Kingdom, was founded and historically ruled by the noble house of Reynolds. The Reynolds lineage led the kingdom for centuries, since they were founded by Arthur Reynolds of Avalon in 6507. 8009 was the first year that someone who was not of Reynolds descent became the leader.
Government Based On Election
Alliance leaders are elected every four years by those within their holds, and keep the term of king or queen as a way to acknowledge the monarchist history of their nations. Each hold has been reformed to keep up to a forward-thinking and lawful standard, putting the good of the littlest people first, and squashing out injustice and prejudice. Each Hold has a king or queen. In each hold, the ruler has a thane and a high septon. The thane is in charge of military command and the high septon advises the ruler on diplomatic relations. Beneath the thane and high septon, there is a Council of Eight- each holding an important role in the hold's government. In the Western Plains, the Council of Eight meets at Gold Port, in Castle Waterdeep.Kings and Queens
The Western Plains, since joining the Alliance, still uses the title of king for its leader. Below are the elected kings and queens of the Western Plains, and how long they served.Joseph Reynolds VI(8002-8008)
Joseph was the heir to the Reynolds lineage and one of the founding members of the Alliance. Him joining the Alliance led to his kingdom becoming known as the Western Plains.Lady Laeral Silverhand(8009-Present)
Lady Laeral is the queen of the Western Plains. She is one of the Seven Sisters—legendary, nigh-immortal figures known to have been blessed by Mystra. (Some even say they are the goddess's daughters.) Her spellcasting ability is impressive but is beginning to wane, and she focuses more on political power than on the arcane these days. She ran her election campaign after her marriage to Khelben Arunsun and staunchly opposed the giant and dragon raids on settlements of Terra Caelum and actively involved herself in such conflicts, gaining popularity and praise from civilians.Demographics
About 65% of Westerners are Humans, with 6% dwarves, 6% orcs, 5% 6% elves, half-orcs, 4% halflings, 3% half-elves, 3% tieflings, and 2% other races.Defences
The Western Plains has many fortresses and towers that guard the border between the Western Plains and the Highfields. These include Blackfort Tower, Bleakkeep, Clover Watch, Fort Greenspell, Hag's Watch, Heartgate Tower, Northbound Tower, Slylight, Southbound Tower, and Stagrock. The Western Plains also has the most impressive army in all of Terra Caelum. Its ranks include more diverse fighters such as Eldritch Knights and Psi Warriors.Dungeons
The landscape of the Western Plains is also home to several known dungeons. Prince's Tombs are an expansive network of catacombs that serve as burial grounds for the ancient Reynolds family. Mudgrove is a dungeon that were once an interconnected sewer system intended for a large city to be built above it. However, funding for the construction stopped, and the sewer system and all buildings constructed fell into disrepair.Industry & Trade
The exports are many; Ale, arms, cloth, fish, furnishings, grain, leather goods, livestock, pottery, refined metals, and all other sorts of finished goods. Imports include leather, ore, timber, and exotic goods from other lands. The principal crops in the Western Plains are grains (wheat, barley, rye, and others), corn, and a great variety of vegetables. Orchards and vineyards are also common in climes favourable to fruit trees and grapes. Planting usually takes place in early or mid-spring. Most civilised areas in the Western Plains farm with iron ploughs, often single-bladed. All other work is done by hand and with hand tools. Most rural areas grow all their own food, but many of western Terra Caelum's larger cities import vast quantities of grain, produce, fruit, or other types of food that their land and economy are unsuited for. Minor magic can help keep food fresh for as much as two or three days longer than normal. Grazing herds of domestic animals is not a particularly efficient way to feed large numbers of people. It takes ten times as much land to produce a pound of meat as it does a pound of grain. But herd animals also provide milk, cheese, bone, leather, and even manure for fertilising crops. The most common domestic animals are cattle, chickens, goats, pigs, and sheep. Any farmer keeps a small number of these animals on whatever land he can spare.Guilds and Factions
The Western Plains are part of the Alliance, and therefore the Alliance forces have the strongest grip over the Hold. Factions aligned with the Alliance are very welcome in the Western Plains, such as the Emerald Enclave or the Harpers. The Emerald Enclave, for example, have a stronghold at Clover Watch, and the Harpers use Hag's Watch as a teleportation circle. The Order of the Gauntlet functions as the primary force of paladins and of knightly training. Their soldiers are elite and welcomed within the ranks of the army of the Western Plains.
