The Atlantean Ferrumaries

From the Lateen: ferrum

Overview

A Ferrumary is the area within which Iron mines operate along the sheer cliff faces of the Northern Escarpment where it borders with the Atlantean Planetia lowlands. The Ferrumaries is term used for the whole region in Mining parlance and official agreements.

Under the De Metallariis, the section of the Codex Atlantisia (Law of the Lands of Atlantis) all metals within the earth are deemed Fruits of the Earth, and are to be picked and selected as and when found with the providence of the Atlantean King being recognised wherein one-fifth shall be given to the Crown in payment.

This section of the codex makes no distinction between crown-holders of other states and so in those areas where more than one King or Prince is involved, a doubling of the tax can occur - with each Crown receiving a one-fifth payment.

In the Atlantean Ferrumaries this often results in a 40% taxation on the ore discovered. It is nevertheless very profitable.

Each mine in the Ferrumaries Area has an appointed Ironmaster (as per the Metallum Martis and ordinances linked to De Metallariis) which increases the smelting capabilities of the mining operation - allowing it to occur without the use of water.

Ferrumary Geographical Location

The Ferrumary of North Eastern Atlantis is a region that runs the length of the Northern Escarpment and borders directly on the Escarpment itself with the Kingdom of the Kharazad.

Ferrumary Population

It is within the Atlantean Kingdom but as it often mines into the Escarpment itself, it is also linked through treaties to the Kharazad Kingdom. It is often populated by Human and Dwarven settlers. Most commonly the Hill Dwarves represent the Dwarven Kingdom in this area.

Ore Production (In Brief)

The area produces over 40% of the Iron ore and 30% of all other forms of ore used in the Atlantean Kingdoms, but only 20% of the ores used in the Kharazad Kingdom.

The Warden of the Ferrumaries

The area designated the Ferrumaries has an appointed Warden who polices and administers the mining rights of the mine owners in the region. The Warden and Assistant Wardens have two main tasks:

First is the visitation
This is to visit local mines to assess the right of the claimant or deed holder to run the mine. If three such visits result in an assessment that the claim is not being administered or managed than the entire deed and right to mine is deemed unfulfilled and withdrawn from the claimant.

Second is the administration.
This is ensuring the payments are made to the appropriate king or kings of the duties owed from the mines in question.
