Hobgoblins are a larger, stronger, smarter, and more menacing form of goblinoids than goblins, but not as powerful as bugbears. By and large hobgoblins, like their kin, are considered evil creatures and often meet this expectation. While Goblinoid society is cruel and harsh, some individuals escape it to carry on lives of virtue, though fewer such individuals are hobgoblins than true goblins. Those few who do take this risk and succeed often meet cautious praise and acceptance from outsiders. Those that do are, however, continuously plagued by their nature. Though hobgoblins are not necessarily evil they are prone to violence and hot tempers and find it difficult to be truly altruistic. When provoked, which is often easy, hobgoblins are vindictive creatures who take glee in causing pain to those that injured them. Those hobgoblins who overcome this nature often do so because of the rewards they find in serving good, rather than evil.
Hobgoblins follow the fate of the
Goblin to the continent of
Sailan. The scattered goblin tribes ran amok around the dragons during the
Second Age, Godswar. Seeing an opportunity, the
Oni sought the goblins, took them for themselves and experimented, creating the now known hobgoblin race. While the race is widely known in Sailan, it spread all around the world. During the
Dragonswar they helped the
Jadeite Empire invade the
Old World, which was their ticked to spread their vile natures. However, mainly in the dragon continent, they are very organized, forming towns, cities, and even nations. While in other places, the most they create are tribes and clans that work as mercenaries.
On Tethys
There are many, small hobgoblin tribes all around the world. While they work in groups, they are mostly considered an evil race, thus hunted down. Some try to break that reputation by becoming mercenaries. In Sailan, however, things are different. Many of the hobgoblins are civilized but lack the rights that other races have in
Jadeite Empire. They can be mostly found in
Giunsan, where they work for their Oni masters, or in their nation of
Buyant.
First World
Hobgoblins in the
First World Theory were an experiment of the father of giants, who needed fodder in his army, thus he mixed the blood of Dwarves to create them. However, they quickly rebelled against their creator.
