Season 3, Episode 4: "The Wizard King" Report
General Summary
The Dream Team, startled by the sudden arrival of Vaughn Blackblood, made a tentative path to the heart of the Spire, to discuss the Oni's intentions in Ezorod. The boisterous merchant was happy to comply, stating that he had come on comission from Shalema, to inform Tesin that she had taken residence on Apostae, and to warn Mist that his tattoos were becoming volatile, and would kill him if he didn't act soon.
However, the party quickly saw through this simple facade, and the Oni divulged that his true desire was to conduct business with the Dream Team, and let slip some information about their shared history... He loosely described an Order of the Mirror, of which he was a part of, and their direct involvement in the formation of Mining Team 6. He seemed shocked that Valentina Terris had not divulged even the basics of their purpose -- or the identity of its affiliated members -- but Chad recognized this was also an act. A thin veneer over an unknown intent, to reveal what had been hidden without the consent of Vaughn's colleagues...
While the party processed that information, Mist decided to purchase services from one of Vaughn's contractors -- later revealed to be the Gorgon -- in order to recover Mining Team 4 from Thyst without starting a war. Then, Isra purchased Vaughn's mediation services, hoping to solidify an alliance with the Hellknights against the Aspis Consortium.
Then the merchant took his leave, promising to stop by whenever he was in the area, and left the Dream Team to ponder, and sleep. In the Dreamlands, they saw a brief vision of Ragarot and Skiv, who seemed to recognize the Dreamer's presence, and understood that their services were requested on Mataras. They gained permission to go on "vacation" from Ferro, although he urged that they be quick about it, given that their Access Beacon was nigh-complete.
In the morning, the Dream Team decided to return to Golarion at last, both to fulfill their monthly duties to House Terris, and to discover the truth of their avatars. They found a group of people desperate to understand what had become of their fates, although some were more active than others.
Of note, Faker was busy interrogating Balvor Treatius, secretary of Riley Montronte, the man who'd ordered the death of Vivian Orion. Under Chad's guidance, Faker discovered that Riley had been visited by Chandra after his failed attempt, and suddenly ordered all of his staff to leave Vivian be...
In addition, Esmerelda got a light scolding from her master, Euridice, who had noticed her pupil's distracted state, and claimed that there was no room for error before the Sunburst Festival.
Afterwards, the players guided their avatars to meet again. Once Ez realized that all involved were members of the Pathfinder Society, the group decided to meet at the Grand Lodge. In need of an alibi, they registered as a temporary adventuring party, and decided to take a 6-star quest to clear out Starwatch Keep. During their exit, Faker noticed that the group was being tailed, but the mystery man fled after being spotted, although he was overheard divulging Yellenwen's location, and was told by his master to leave her alone for now.
The group stopped in Precipice Quarter to grab a hot meal, but they were interrupted by a continent-wide broadcast by the Wizard King Kesil. He announced that rumors of citizens being taken over by "puppeteers" were indeed true, and displayed dozens of names and faces -- some alive, some dead -- that had been confirmed to be such a creature. Kesil implored his people to avoid these "villians" at all costs, and to report any sightings to the nearest Sword of Absalom.
Styx noticed that the entities described in Kesil's speech often arrived out of nowhere, or replaced the souls inside existing citizens of Absalom. Given that the the group still had control over themselves (minus the vague force of will created by the players), she postulated that they must be a different variation of the phenomenon. Still, the group decided to be cautious, and were eager to get outside the walls.
They scouted out the Keep for a time -- Faker from above and Styx in the seas below -- but eventually settled on a surprise assault, utilizing the party's new ability to teleport to their leader. They quickly realized why the quest had been returned five times in the past year, as over a dozen goblins in brand-new leather armor erupted from the inner gate, turning a simple cut-and-run into a full-scale battle.
As the leader of the goblins fell, the shaman teleported back inside the Keep, where an open door invites the party in...
