Elletree Hills
Ruler: The Grainlord
Economy: No exports, imports much of what it needs
Militia: The standing garrison of no more than two dozen Watchers of the Hills
Points of interest: Singing Wind Inn, The Elletree
Elletree Hills is really just a few farms and buildings near the last military log-and-boulder stockade known to lock its gates at night where most travelers are unwelcome after dark. It marks the last protected area for caravans on the Long Road until they reach Longforge. Much of the room behind the stockade is used to store grain and dry vegetables for the winter months when merchant visits are few and far between. The remainder is taken up by the barracks, stables, and armory for the Watchers and the Singing Wind Inn. Many centuries ago, before the end of The Godswar, this land was a favored battleground for control of the lands north of the North. Bones still litter the field and cairns of the dead are everywhere. Now used by the stout and determined few farming and ranching families making a living off the land most would consider the end of civilization. When Ethigoviel is referred to as The Frontier it is most likely the image of Elletree Hills which comes to mind. Plows still occasionally turn up skeletons in rusting armor, broken and decayed weapons, or other detritus, and every season there are stories of an unlucky herd animal or poor soul lost to the triggering of some long forgotten trap of war, or worse.
The Free Traders of Ebonbed pay to keep and maintain the standing garrison. Currently, there are no more than two dozen Watchers of the Hills to act as the visible limit of caravan protection and scouts for the region west of the Mermekion Moors. They still send out small teams of scouts in the winter months so as to keep informed of conditions along The Long Road but they are meant solely as recon units and do not project power further than the stockade itself.
The name of the location comes from the legendary Elletree which sits atop the lone hill southwest of the stockade. Watchers who have scouted the area and seen it have returned disillusioned with stories that the fabled immortal tree is little more than a twiggy bush atop a barren crag in the middle of nowhere.
