Ethigoviel
The Frontier
The Frontier is for many simply called “The North”. It refers to those lands north of the city of Freehaven between the West Coast of The Great Sea and Shadow Peak Mountains, beyond which lays the domain of the monster-infested Broken Lands. Ethigoviel encompasses all the lands south of Hauth, north of Rhigolia, and West of Maugulach, Eraussi and Yrdahn. A rugged, heavily wooded wilderness marked by cool, mild summers and harsh, bitter winters. What little civilization has arisen can be found hugging the coasts and inland river valleys. The rest is the domain of orcnean (orc), trolls, gigan (goliath), barbarian tribes, a few Aelfeayr (elves) who remain, as well as other monstrous denizens who occasionally hurl themselves in fury upon the walls of towns and villages from the Underrealm below. Though wild, it is a land of many riches, mineral wealth unequaled elsewhere in the world is found here, along with seemingly endless stands of timber so large they are considered legends elsewhere. Here too is a wealth of hidden histories; rumors remain of lost civilizations and knowledge of vanished realms. The Frontier is populated by many peoples with a variety of cultural backgrounds. There is no unified human nation in Ethigoviel, only loosely linked individual communities and barbarian tribes roaming the wilderness. Ancestors of those who left the south after The Godswar in search of a better life now control much of the coastal lands. Ancient and reclusive are the primitive but peaceful Mountain Men of Collossea. Northmen, a title given to describe the more civilized people of Ethigoviel, have worked hard to attain a peaceful culture based on trade and agriculture. There still remains a deeply entrenched culture of being prepared, however. Always ready to mete out those who would prefer to raid and make war, those who desire to destroy and take rather than work to build a better life. In the far North, beyond the Raging Sea, the fierce people of the tundra Jarldoms of Hauth continue their long tradition of raiding their former cousins. Powerful barbarian tribes of the old ways continue to roam the wilds. Bickering and warring on one another the Orcneas have thrown themselves against the borders of the civilized world since the War of the Races. In the midst of this hard and wildland and the tales it inspires, it is little wonder that the cultured folk of Carona Borealis produce arguably the most skilled bards in all the realms. Then there are the stalwart defenders of Nethlund in the east and Nethlore in the west, descendants of an ancient dark-haired race of refugees who arrived from another place on the shores of Netherlake, known as Netherans. Their history is a cautionary tale against the use of arcane and divine magic and they urge all who listen to embrace science as they have or face the same consequences they once did. Rumors persist that the cataclysm they speak of created The Hellspont and was the cause of the Aelfeayr retreating from the north, though this is largely dismissed as fantasy. Then there are the Freeborn, the people of Freehaven, the melting pot of nations, a port of call for refugees, smugglers, businessmen, diplomats, hustlers, entrepreneurs, wanderers, and travelers from across the realms. Called The Birthplace of Peace, it can be a dangerous place, but those who live there accept the risks because they share in a dream given form. They dream of a realm without war, where all species live side by side in mutual respect and work out their differences peacefully. A home away from home for visitors and, in the views of many, their last best hope for peace. At any time of the year ships from Lungshi, Perracia, Dannor and Nydeis are mixed with those from Yoahan and even Wicaen tied next to vessels from the Commonwealth, the Heartland Kingdoms and the Shires at the protected docks of The Freeport. People of all races can be seen walking, shopping and being entertained on The Promenade. It is said that even the bitterness between barbarian tribesmen who protect their ancestral mounds and have raided towns and villages who strayed too close to their traditional lands can be found here peacefully mingling with people of the city-states, something that rarely happens elsewhere in the north. Freehaven is known worldwide as a shelter and sanctuary of commerce and diplomacy. A place, for the quarter million humans and others who call it home, which has become a shining beacon of hope in the North, much like the Forest of Feneri was for the Aelfeayr of the region long ago in the ages before their numbers began to decline in the region.Maps
