Freebrook Guard House
The guardhouse is a solid stone building right next to the brook. A pair of guards are standing right outside, always watchful.
Going inside, there is a small area reserved for those wanting to talk to a guard. There is a desk piled high with papers (waiting for a scribe that has not come to replace the recently murdered one) in one corner and a few chairs in the other corner. Two corridors lead off of this room.
Down the corridor to your right are the jail cells. Dark and damp with a smell of mold and dried urine, the cells are protected with a set of iron bars spaced roughly 6 inches apart and contain a bundle of straw to sleep on. You wouldn't want to be in here for the night, that's for sure. A jailer can be found at a small table, absently playing with some dice.
Past that is a small room that has a large table at one end and an even longer table at the other. A pair of small books lie on the smaller table and chairs are stacked on the wall farthest from you.
Down the corridor in front of you is a large room filled with low beds. Half a dozen guards - including one with a brand new set of scale armour and a helmet that identifies him as the captain - lie on the beds while others play with some cards at a table at the far end of the room, loudly making bets.
Architecture
The guardhouse is of stone, like many buildings in the centre of town. A perceptive individual may note that there are places where the stones are a bit loose, which hide a couple of caches for The Thieves' Collective - the perfect place away from prying eyes, oddly enough. A pair of guards is always on the outside of the building.
History
The Imperial Army has always had a small garrison here in Freebrook, but haven't prevented the rising amount of crime in the town. They were instrumental in putting out the fire that claimed several market buildings, but have never caught the perpetrators.
The Drakeslayers were forced to give statements here following the attack in the town square. They were acquitted of any charges and then began to defeat and capture local bandits and rebels for the garrison.
