Freebrook Market Square
Going into the marketplace, you see a large square, mostly gravel, partially paved. A few stalls are set up along the brookside, hawking fresh food and handicrafts. Around the square on the east end are many tall, stone buildings, with small shops on the lower levels and presumably homes on the higher levels. They have many colourful banners and painted wooden signs. A couple of buildings are in ruins, a mess of broken timbers and half-melted stone foundations that have sat there for some time.
Architecture
The square is mostly gravel with the main road going along the western edge of the marketplace. Several merchants now make the square home, preferring to set up deals in their main shops along the square and in the streets around it, but a few local farmers sell food and handicrafts from colourful stalls.
Around the square, starting from the northwest corner going clockwise, are:
Darantus' Arcane Wares: a recently opened arcane goods shop, specializing in texts and spell components. The store is very cluttered, with stacks of books and dusty bins and boxes everywhere. Darantus Slénami himself can usually be found at the main counter near the door unless he needs to give a report to the College of Mages.
A small shoe shop of no major importance.
the burned down ruin of a woodworker's studio.
Zaymil's Floral Goods: a flower shop owned by Darúkk Zaymil, a merchant of Hayim descent and member of The Nine Daggers. His shop contains many fresh flowers that he has imported from his homeland organized by colour and size of the bud. He is often away on business, but his wife or one of his sons can be found running the store.
another burned down ruin, this one originally a greengrocer's judging by the sign still stuck in the ground
several homes of merchants and their families. One of them is the home of Sari Fehaz, another Nine Daggers member and the owner of two warehouses in the west side of town.
Alana Sadentes's Pawning, a pawn shop operated as a front for a local scout for The Thieves' Collective. Alana herself sells all kinds of oddities, books and minor equipment, but a perceptive individual would note that much of her wares are very dusty.
The Dargin's Den, on the other side of the main highway.
A couple of smaller shops staffed by locals, also on this side of the road.
On the other side of the river are the smithy of Karin Nemed, the armour workshop of Wesel Dashadir, and the local guardhouse. Wesel was also a scout of the Thieves' Collective, but he is now retired from that life.
Just north of the square is Alté's Old Cane Inn.
History
The square was built into the main Domiel Road, with several (understandably irate) farmers having been moved from the spot. The fire of 175 II mostly hit the north end of the square, with a couple of shops still in rubble after the owners couldn't pay to rebuild. These sites are planning to give way to more specialized shops or perhaps a small garden.
In 182 II , there was an attack orchestrated by the Nine Daggers and The Dragon Heresy that targeted the town Magistrate. He escaped unharmed, but many stalls and shops were set ablaze. The Drakeslayers put an end to the monsters but were brought in for questioning in connection with the attack.
