Head Magistrate of the Gratic Empire

Qualifications

A candidate for the post of Head Magistrate must have been a regular Lord Magistrate of the Gratic Empire for at least five years.

Requirements

Other requirements for the position of Head Magistrate are:  
  • Only humans are permitted to hold this rank, like many imperial positions; and
  • There is a tendency for members of richer and high-class families to be Head Magistrate.
  • Appointment

    The appointment of a Head Magistrate is performed by the Emperor, who also confers the role. The day of the appointment, a gala will be held in the evening as per tradition.

    Duties

    The Head Magistrate is the representative of their particular Province, and so they have certain moral duties:  
  • Represent the people and culture of their Province;
  • Champion their people in the imperial government, assuring fair treatment of all Provinces; and
  • provide guidance and inspiration for the various Magistrates in their Province.
  • Responsibilities

    A Head Magistrate has many tasks to be completed regularly and fairly:  
  • Direct and order the various Magistrates of their Province;
  • Appoint said Magistrates when the position needs filling;
  • Adjudicate disputes between Magistrates; and
  • Broker necessary deals and protections for any dwarven holds in their Province.
  • Benefits

    As the heads of their Province, each Head Magistrate receives many benefits from their position. A seat on the Imperial Council is one such honour, and while in the capital of the Empire or the largest city in their Province, they will have a manor house dedicated to their use. As a politician, the Head Magistrate also receives a small portion of the Province's taxes as a salary. Finally, this person works as leader of their Provincial Assembly.

    Accoutrements & Equipment

    The blue robes common to all regular Magistrates become more elaborate upon ascending to the rank of Head Magistrate, including a special golden trim to their robes and a special charm or piece of jewelry that identifies them as belonging to their province.

    Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

    Dismissal of a Head Magistrate can only be done by the Emperor himself, and is usually done to save face and/or to punish crimes committed by the Head Magistrate.

    History

    Artus III created this title in 62 I for two Provinces, and the number of those has increased over the centuries.

    Cultural Significance

    The Head Magistrate plays a very direct role in the governance and culture of their Province, as one of their minor tasks is the organization and patronage of cultural festivals and holidays.
