Sanbalet

Sanbalet was a wizard and smuggler from the Styes, a member of S'gothgahs Cult of Bane, and the leader of the smuggling operation based out of the Haunted Mansion of Saltmarsh.

History

Sanbalet was born in Seaton in 1445, shortly before the town's drastic decline. Growing up in a rapidly decaying town, Sanbalet fell into crime to survive, eventually finding a place for himself in smuggling, working for the committee member Mr. Dory.
In the early 1490's, Sanbalet discovered the Haunted Mansion of Saltmarsh and realized the abandoned structure would be an excellent base for his smuggling operation. He, his second-in-command, Ned Shakeshaft, and his men dug out a serious of smuggling tunnels to connect the mansion's basement to the ocean. Sanbalet's men, while exploring the mansion, also discovered the undead alchemist who built the structure and his still active skeletal servants. After losing a few men to the skeletons, Sanbalet ordered the hidden laboratory sealed.
Over the next few years, Sanbalet and his gang continued to use the mansion as a way point for smugglers sailing along the Sword Coast. To keep saltmarshers away, Sanbalet cast a few magic mouth spells around the house to simulate the presence of a ghost.
In 1494, Sanbalet was ordered to return to the Styes by Mr. Dory. While there, Sanbalet met Dory's new patron, S'gothgah, who brought Sanabalet into the fold. The smuggler returned to his post now bearing a Banesmark, ready to serve the aboleth when needed.
In mid-1496, Sanbalet, and by extension Mr. Dory, began smuggling weapons to the Sunny Shore Tribe in order to inflame their conflict with the sahuagin in the Javan River Spire. To get these weapons, Sanbalet hired the Sea Ghost and its captain Sigurd "Snake Eyes". Sigurd picked up the weapons from the haunted mansion and exchanged payment there, in order to prevent the lizardfolk from knowing where the weapons were truly coming from.
On the 26th of Flamerule, 1496, Necian Arrzen, Micah Pierce, Lyra, Keyleth, and Reyna Moonflower were hired by Crab to put an end to the rumors about the mansion once and for all. While exploring the mansion, the five of them uncovered the smuggler's operation, killing Ned Shakeshaft. Sanbalet attempted to fight back against the attackers, but was burnt to death by Necian Arrzen, his last words asking S'gothgah what he did wrong.
