He was famous as the richest being in all of the Nine Realms, possessing a hoard of gold which he kept at the bottom of a lake, guarding it in the form of a monstrous pike.
When Loki (who had travelled back to Odin's youth via the power of the Time Stone) was charged with paying a vast blood-price to atone for the murder of Otr, he sought to steal Andvari's treasure.
Andvari had magically protected himself about all known weapons, but Loki, as a time-traveller, was able to kill him with a bazooka, a weapon Andvari had not known to protect himself again.
With his dying breaths, Andvari cursed the gold, so that it would reveal the truth of those who possessed it, intending that this would reveal what Loki had done. However, Loki was able to talk his way out of facing any consequences.
