When She comes up to Shade

Famous Shadetown Wyrdsmith shanty about a lovers' reunion, as well as the tradition to go 'all out' on docking in Shadetown. The lyrics below are those of one popular version of the song, though there are many variants. The one in this article is a rare 'clean' version.   Lyrics have been translated to keep the same tone as the original. 'Lass' can be used interchangably with 'Lad,' as there was no gender to the original language it was written in.

Lyrics

I met my lass up Refuge Street,   Down Refuge Street she came, oh!       (Haul)All away and over we'll go,   when she comes up to Shade, oh!       This lass could make Bigs' tavern sweet,   And the Wyrdsmith fast did play, oh!       (Haul)All away and over we'll go,   when she comes up to Shade, oh!       I took my lass to dance that night,   We danced 'till we were dazed, oh!       (Haul)All away and over we'll go,   when she comes up to Shade, oh!       My lass took me to sing that night,   What gladful sounds we made, oh!       (Haul)All away and over we'll go,   when she comes up to Shade, oh!       Midst thrown out by the tavern keep,   when she found I could not pay, oh!       (Haul)All away and over we'll go,   when she comes up to Shade, oh!       I left my lass down Refuge Street,   Up Refuge Street I sailed, oh!       (Haul)All away and over we'll go,   when she comes up to Shade, oh!       Next time we dock up Refuge Street,   And the lass she looks my way, oh!       (Haul)All away and over I'll go,   when she comes up to Shade, oh!
