Malbolge
Malbolge is the sixth layer of the the Nine Hells. It serves as the prison of the Nine Hells.
Government
Malbolge is ruled by Glasya, Ashmedai's daughter. Her court is primarily composed of erinyes, paeliryons, and succubi. Tartach is the only duke serving under her.Notable Locations
- Garden of Delights: A walled garden adjacent to Glasya's palace. Home of the hellwasps.
- Hair Forest: A closely packed forest of massive, scaled hairs.
- Lake of Bile: Despite its name, it is a group of vile, toxic lakes.
- Maggoth Thyg: A mysterious cavern located at the bottom of one of the many rocky slopes of Malbolge. Devils are terrified of entering this cavern and all who have entered have never returned.
- Ossiea: Glasya's fortress, built near Hair Forest from the remains of Malagard's enlarged skull.
Inhabitants
Malbolge is an extremely inhospitable layer of Hell, even for devils. Its harsh conditions deter many from venturing there. The most common inhabitants of Malbolge are erinyes and paeliryons, favored by Glasya, the ruler. Other devils found here include barbed devils, bone devils, cambions, ice devils, legion devils, lemures, nupperibos, spinagons, storm devils, and war devils. Beyond devils, Malbolge is also home to giant centipedes, giant spiders, giant wasps, hell lice, kalabon, and night hags. These creatures add to the dangers of this inhospitable realm.Geography
Malbolge is a vast, chaotic landscape of angular black stone blocks, each the size of a city or larger. These blocks are stacked haphazardly, creating a labyrinth of passages and caverns. The ground is unstable, with frequent avalanches that crush anything in their path. Foul-smelling vapors rise from the depths, illuminating the sky in a blood-red hue. Some speculate that Malbolge rests on an infinite sea of lava, as flammable materials left on the ground spontaneously combust.
The landscape resembles Gehenna, with steep, craggy slopes prone to avalanches. Defenses like copper-shod redoubts can help protect against falling rocks, but even they can be overwhelmed by major avalanches.
Pillars of adamantine stand on the slopes, supporting platforms that hold suspended cages. These cages imprison condemned devils, who are constantly injured by falling rocks but rarely killed.
History
Malbolge was once ruled by Moloch. His advisor, Malagard, convinced him to rebel against Ashmedai during the Reckoning of Hell. When Moloch was defeated, Ashmedai appointed Malagard, now known as the Hag Countess, as the ruler of Malbolge.
However, Asmodeus's true intentions were revealed when the Hag Countess's body grew to an enormous size and ruptured, transforming Malbolge into a realm of decaying flesh. Glasya replaced the Hag Countess as ruler.
