Lazgar (Laz-Gar)

Introduction:

Lazgar is a Region of the Orc Domain south of the Celestial Mountain and north of the Abbas Waste. The Region occupies the Lazgar River Valley, which is named after the founder of the region Lazgar Thenelis. The Lazgar Region is fairly properous. It is neither the wealthiest nor the most powerful region, but Lazgar is still respected by their neighbors. This is largely thanks to House Thenelis, which can track its lineage back to the original Orc Clans that joined the Helena Empire. In the year 50 AC (19,400th year of recorded history) Lady Ahri Thenelis passed away from disease leaving her young son, Malthu Thenelis, to rule. Lord Malthu is respected as an academic and scholar, but some are skeptical of his ability to govern.

History:

During the rule of Utican by the Helena Empire, the Lazgar River Valley was never captured by Helena. There were outposts at times, and some attempts at establishing villages but each of these failed. The region itself was conquered by Lazgar Thenelis, a descendent of a prominent Orc family within the Helena Empire.   Lazgar began his campaign into the modern Lazgar region after he successfully captured the Glorious Valley from the Odion after generations of failed campaigns by the Utican Orcs of the fledgling Orc Domain. Lazgar established the Proving Grounds in the Glorious Valley and granted the fortress to an order of priestesses dedicated to Luthic. In exchange the priestesses pledged their support and the support of their Orog zealots. With the support of the legendary Orogs and renewed support from Orc Nobles Lazgar pushed into the Lazgar River Valley. Over the course of several campaigns General Lazgar Thenelis captured the Odion city of Gesta.   General Lazgar passed away and named his daughter as his heir. Since the ascension of Lady Malla, the Orc Nobles of Lazgar have had to contend with rival regions, raids from the humans of the south, and incursions by pirates from Exgilios. Several members of House Thenelis managed to claim the title of Archon and sit upon the Heavenly Throne. The most notable among these was Lord Orlorn Thenelis who claimed the title of Archon in (the 10,597th year of recorded history). Archon Orlorn and his descendants occupied the Heavenly Throne for 514 years before Archon Maldan Thenelis abdicated and went into exile under threat of death from his successor. As part of his abdication, Maldan's daughter, Orla, was allowed to maintain her status as the ruling Orc Noble of the Lazgar Region.   In recent years House Thenelis has greatly improved their relationship with the Odion peoples of the Abbas Waste. Many Odion goods find their way to the Lazgar Bazaar and port at Waveside. Under the rule of Lady Ahri Thenelis architects and engineers were dispatched to the coastline of the Abbas Waste to aid in the construction of a port and the building of ships. In exchange the Odion agreed to help combat pirate activity among the Lazgar coastline. Other Orc Nobles, particularly House Acantha of the Zufin Region, see Lazgar's cooperation with the Odion as a mistake.

Honoring the Old and New Pantheons:

Most people in Lazgar worship a mix of the Orc Pantheon and Helena Pantheon. Individuals tend to venerate the gods most closely related to their profession or day to day life. Because the gods worshiped in Lazgar are so varied there are many chapels but no great temples like those found in other regions.

A New Philsophy:

Lord Malthu has stirred controversy amongst the Orc Nobles due to his philosophical beliefs. Malthu is a follower of the teachings of the Orc Political Philosopher Shel Zaredi. Zaredi teaches that peace and cooperation fuels economic development and free trade is the best path to prosperity. Based on these beliefs Malthu has tirelessly pursued a strategy of creating a complex web of trade agreements, non-agression pacts, and alliances amongst the Orc Domain. Malthu hopes this will bring a peaceful end to the Endless Strife and prevent future wars over the Heavenly Throne. Only time will tell how effective Malthu's strategy will be.

Forgetting Past Wrongs:

Lord Malthu has continued the relationship with the Odion that his mother originally fostered. He has even taken several people of the Odion into his service, most notably his personal body guard is of the Odion. Malthu also periodically hosts Priests and Priestesses from the Odion. There remain sceptics in Lazgar and the Abbas Wastes but for the most part the relationship between the Odion humans and people of Lazgar has been seen as a resounding diplomatic success.
