Playing this Character
So you want to play as Stala in some TTRPG (table top role playing game)? I don't blame you. I can help you make a character sheet for D&D and Pathfinder. But there are a few house keeping things we need to go over.
For the D&D... the character sheet that was used is from D&D fifth edition before the 2024 release. So the information will be out of date. So you will need to update the character sheet for the lastest verison. I will also call out information that comes from from D&D books. I will also link to the books on Amaon.
For Patherfinder... I will using Patherfinder second edition. It will also not be the remaster revision. I didn't know that was a thing until just now.
Also I will only be going up to level ten for Stala.
Dungeons and Dragons
Inspiration
Stala is based on the character of
Jessie Rasberry from the remake of
Final Fanasty 7. The reeason why we are doing the remake is because the Banada Squad are the same character in the orginal game. Hot take is very hot.
Jessie is a hand to hand figther. She can use guns and is good at making bombs. This means that we have some options for making her as character in Dungeons and Dragons or D&D. But not as many options as I would have liked. I will explain later.
Race
Stala is half-elf, which we can read more about in the
Player's Handbook starting on page 38. As a reminder I am using the handbook before the 2024 update. This give her dark visiona dn fey ancestry. Stala will gain proficiency in two skills. I will let the player choose, just make sure that they are on theme for Stala. She will also gain an extra language.
But we re not done yet! We will grab the
Sword Coast Adventure's Guide. On page 116 we have more about the half-elves. Mostly variants with half-elves. Stala will be half-wood elf. This will give her bows to play with. Or the player can choose fleet of foot. That will make her move more quickly.
Background
There are two backgrounds that Stala can choose. The first one is the entertainer and then the criminal. Let's unpack it.
Stala is an actress, so the entertainer is a good choice. Here is what Stala will be getting:
- Skill: Acrobatics and Performance
- Tools: Disguise kit and a music instrument
The second background that we are looking at is the criminal. Stala, like Jessie, is a member of a criminal group. Stala is part of
Kezedfrunch while Jessie is apart from Avalanche. As a criminal Stala will be getting:
- Skill: Deception and Stealth
- Tools: Gaming Set and Thieves' Tools
- Equipment: a crowbar, a set of dark common clothes with a hood, and a pouch of 15 gold coins
This is the background that she will be picking. Stala's crimal background is more important to her. Acting is a childish hooby that she enjoys when she can. But she needs to be a criminal, because it makes more sense for her character.
Class
Looking back t Jessie, let's figure out what class she would be. We know by playing the game that Jessie gets punchy when mad. She knows how to shoot hand guns and she knows how to make a bomb. In fact she makes two in the first game. This would make her a ranger, monk, and artificer mix. But that is Jessie, so what about Stala.
I would love to make Stala an articer, but I don't think it is as explosive as it could be. So Stala will be a full ranger. She will getting as a ranger:
- Armor: Light, medium armor, and shields
- Weapons: Simple, and martial weapons
- Tools: None
- Saving Throws: Strength and Dexterity
- Skills: Athletics, Perception, and Stealth
Since the ranger has to pick a subclass at level one. She should grab the Hunter subclass or the Gloomstalker. This will make her a better at shooting and stealth. Just have her taught in unarmed fighting later.
Feats
Since Stala will max out at level 10 she will have a small number of feats. According to
dndbeyond.com she will have a maximum of two feats. But I will suggest three.
The first feat that we will grab is the Gunner. This feat is in
Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, making it a more uncommon feat. This feat gives Stala the ability to use firearms.
The second feat should be Mobile. This will give Stala an extra 10 feet of movement. This will let her stay in range of her foes. The third and final feat should be something that will give Stala a more... explosive. Something with alchemy, but I am not to sure.
Pathfinder
Concept
Keeping in mind that Stala is inspired by the character of
Jessie Rasberry from the remake of Final Fanasty 7. This will make Stala similiar to Jessie, but she is a little bit different. With what we made with the D&D sheet we should be able to make a character for Pathfinder. I also like Pathfinder a little bit better...
The basic concept of a character is the ancestry, background, and class. This is also the Pathfinder ABC's. Keeping in mind that Stala will only be leveled up to level ten.
Ancestry
Stala is half-elf, which means that she has an odd ancestry/heritage. Stala's ancestry is human at the start. This will give Stala the basic human ability. Here are the numbers:
- Hit Points: 8
- Size: Medium
- Speed: 25 feet
- Ability Boost: Two free
- Languages: Common and more based on Intelligence modifier
How do we make a half-elf in Pathfinder? We use the heritage spot at level one to pick Aiuvarin. This will make the character half-elf. By reading the feat, it doesn't look like there are any added abilities.
Background
This is how the character was raised or what they were before they started to adventuring. This gives us a fun edge with Stala. There are there are three backgrounds that work for Stala.
The first, background that Stala should think about grabing reflects that she is
Ungifted. The background is called Anti-Magical. This background is rare and is from
Pathfinder: Secrets of Magic. This background makes it so magic doesn't work right around Stala. She will be able to pick up a lore skill with this background... I think. Stala should choose Theater Lore or Underworld Lore. I would pick the Threater lore.
The second background that will work for Stala is entertainer. As an entertainer she will be getting two ability boosts. One of those abilities need to be Dexterity or Charisma. Both of those boosts fit the character. Stala will also be trained in Performance and the Theater Lore skills. She will also get the Fasciinating Performer skill feat. If this feat is not chosen Stale still needs to grab Theater Lore when she can.
The third background is criminal. Stala is a part of the criminal group
Kezedfrunch with
Nyesi Ncasssekwa being the leader of her cell. As a criminal, Stala will be able to choose two ability boosts. One of these skills need to be Dexterity or Intellgence. Both will work for Stala's character. She will also get the Stealth skill and the Underworld Lore skill. She will also gain the Experienced Smuggler skill feat. If this background is not choose Stala will need to learn Stealth and Underworld Lore.
The background that I think should be picked is Anti-Magical. This because being Ungifted is a huge part of her character. Stala is the second or third character that is un gifted. The other two characters are
Tiutme Soyla and
Irˈgincurle, the mothers of
Raga Soyla and
Aligioni Sebla respectfully.
Aùshe Sûngâzuōng is also a little bit ungifted.
Class
In D&D I thought that the best class or classes were ranger, monk, and artificer. But none of these are the Pathfinder class that we are choosing. The class that Stala will be the Alchemist. With this class Stala will be getting these:
- Key Ability: Intelligence
- Hit Points: 8 plus Constitution
- Trained: Perception
- Saving Throws: Expert in Fortitude and Reflex. Trained in Will
- Skills: Trained in Crafting, Acrobatics, Athletics, Diplomacy, and Stealth
- Attacks: Trained in simple weapons, alchemical bombs, and unarmed attacks
- Defence: Trained in light and medium armor and unarmored defense
All Alchemist have a research field. Stala's field will be that of the Bomber. The Bomber will give her a few extra powers that fit her character and what she does for
Kezedfrunch. Since Stala will only be leveled to 10 let's just look at the powers of the Bomber up to level 10.
- Formulas: Two common 1st-level alchemical bombs
- Field Benefit: When throwing an alchemical bomb with the splash trait, you can choose to deal splash damage to only your primary target instead of the usual splash area.
- Field Vials: When you Strike with a versatile vial, you can choose to have it deal cold, electricity, or fire damage instead of acid damage.
- Field Discovery: You have calculated all the angles to maximize a bomb’s splash. When you throw an alchemical bomb with the splash trait, you can cause the bomb to deal splash damage equal to your Intelligence modifier instead of the normal amount.
This will be more than enough to make Stala a dangerous foe on the field. She will have to rely on her friends quickness to get out of her bombs way. Because even an expert can't always control the blast of her bombs.
Details
The feats and skills that make a character are in the details. Since I am only doing Stala up to level 10 she will be getting fewer feats than the main characters. Keep in mind that this doesn't mean that she is not important as a chracter. It just means that we have not decided to use her in later parts of the story yet.
Ancestry Feats
This is what makes Stala stand out from other characters of her same ancestry and heritage. Here is my short list.
- Level 1: Natural Ambition, Alchemical Assessment or Far Lobber
- Level 5: Earned Glory
- Level 9: Cooperative Soul
The first ancestry that Stala should grab is Natural Ambition, which is a human feat. Even though Stala parents raised her to have a good head on her shoulders, they still encourged her to be ambitionous and follow her dreams. Stala will gain a level on class feat. There are three feats that I think will work for Stala. One of these feats we can grab as her level one class feat later. So she can choose Alchemical Assessment or Far Lobber. The first one will let Stala find things to make her bombs out of. The second one will let her throw the bomb a longer distance.
The second feat that Stala should grab is Earned Glory. This feat can only be used by a half-elf or Aiuvarin. This feat will make her trained in Performance. That way she can tell stories to elves to earn their trust. She will also gain the Impressive Performance feat. This is a good pick if Stala is not an entertainer.
The third feat that she should grab is Cooperative Soul. This is another human feat. It will allow Stala to work with her friends and team better.
Class Feats
These are feats that make her a better fighter. They also make her different from other Alchemist Bombers. Also because of how short the list is I will also call out a few other feats that I think will work. Normally, I would grab these feats at a higher level. So have fun with the either or options. Here is my list of what Stala should have:
- Level 1: Quick Bomber
- Level 2: Smoke Bomb or Improvise Admixture
- Level 4: Healing Bomb or Enduring Alchemy
- Level 6: Debilitating Bomb
- Level 8: Glitter Crystals or Sticky Bomb
- Level 10: Unstable Concoction
The thrid level one bomber feat that I thought would fit Stala is the Quick Bomber. I also figured that it would be the best feat for her first real class feat. The Quick Bomber feat let's Stala keep all bomb in an easy to reach area. It will let her pull out a bomb without thinking about it.
At level two we have two different feats that we can choose from. The first is the Smoke Bomb. The smoke bomb can be used to help her friends escape danger. The second feat is Improvise Admixture. This will let Stala make a new bombs or vials out of scraps. This would useful in cases where she runs out of vials.
Level four also has two options. The first option is the Healing Bomb. This feat let's Stala throw a potion like a bomb. Anyone near the "explosion" can be healed some of their hit points. The second option is Enduring Alchemy. This will let Stala make brews that last a little longer than they normally would.
At level six we have the Debilitating Bomb. This will let Stala add a crystalline additive to an alchemical bomb to have it undermine her enemies. This can cause blindness, dizziness, and confusion. I think that is is a good thing to add to her toolbelt, because it helps her allies get a better hit or run away.
Level eight also has two feats that I thought sounded good. The first is the Glitter Crystals feat, which is a common feat from
Pathfinder Lost Omens: Tian Xia Character Guide. This feat let's Stala add an extra kick to her healing elixirs. The elixir reduce the drained or stupefied condition by one. The elixir could also remove the dazzled, or deafened condition. Anyone who consumes the modified healing elixir or alchemical food gains this benefit in addition to the food or elixir's normal effects. The second option is the Sticky Bomb. She will be able to make a surface sticky and harder to move across.
Finally, at level ten, we have the Unstable Concoction feat. This feat will let Stala mix an very volatile liquid into a bomb. This acid bomb will do damage to everything that it touches, so it is best to make sure that everyone can get to cover before throwing it.
Skill Feats
These are the extra skills that a character is good at. Here is the list that I think works best for Stala:
- Level 2: Specialty Crafting, Glassmaking
- Level 4: Seasoned
- Level 6: Virtuosic Performer
- Level 8: Quick Repair
- Level 10: Experienced Professional
Since Stala already knows a thing or two about alchemy we need to pick a different skill. I would pick glassmaking, because it will let Stala make new vials. It would also make her more self-sufficient. She could also find broken glass and make it into something more useful.
Seasoned will give Stala a better cooking skill. A trope that I like, even though I have only really seen it once or twice, is that there is no difference between cooking and alchemy. I think that it would be a fun twist for her character. She could work part-time as a cook at
Nyesi's bar,
Quim Brear.
The third feat is Virtuosic Performer. This let's her be a better acter. Stala being an actor is important for her character. The fourth feat that she can pick up is Quick Repair. This will make her a better crafter and maker. Just remember that to boost her crafting skill when you can. Crafting is center to her character and class. Experienced Professional will let her make more money with a skill or lore that she has been trained in.
General Feats
This kind of feat adds more to the character. Since Stala is only only up to level 10 she only gets two of these. Here is my short list:
- Level 3: Robust Health
- Level 7: Improvised Repair
The first feat that we will grab is Robust Health. She will physiology responds well to first aid. This will make her heal faster and easier. The second feat on the list is Improvised Repair. This will let Stala fix things with scraps.
