Duchy of Ubersreik
The town of Ubersreik is not just the name of a fortress town, it is also lends its name to the surrounding duchy.
The duchy is also a Primary Estate. Which means that the Duke of Ubersreik can sit on the Reikland Diet, Reikland’s legislative body, and that the ruling duke needs to answer to nobody but the Grand Prince of the Reikland himself.
The duchy contains seven fiefs, which are themselves split into many smaller estates. However, as Ubersreik currently has no duke, the rulers of Ubersreik’s fiefs currently have no liege lord. The most obvious resolution, outside installing a new duke, would be to have these fiefs swear allegiance to Archduke Victor von Walfen, to whom the Duke of Ubersreik has sworn fealty to in the past.
However, because of a quirk in Reikland law, doing this would require these seven fiefs be declared Primary Estates, which they are not and making them so would also have the implication of giving their ruling families seats of the Reikland Diet which the Grand Prince is no willing to consider.
Thus, these seven fiefs, with Ubersreik at the centre, are currently stuck in a political limbo without a direct liege, and thus without any voice on the Reikland Diet. Whilst this brings with it certain disadvantages, it also leaves the Noble Houses of Ubersreik with an odd freedom that few noble houses in the Empire share: they currently have no direct liege dictating their actions.
Geography
This duchy contains a swathe of the fertile land that forms part of the Reiklands Vorbergland region. Its varied terrain includes soaring peaks, verdant valleys, swift rivers, placid lakes, dense forests, and fertile fields and is the main bread basket that provides the food for most of the northern Empire and the Reikland in particular and Ubersreik forms a vital role as both a trading hub and protective bastion against invasions or raids that would disrupt the food production of the area.
In particular the duchy guards the pass through the Grey Mountains known as the Grey Lady Pass. This is one of only two major safe routes across the Grey Mountains between the Empire and Bretonnia, making it critical both for trade and security.
