The Church of Mysteries

The Church of Mysteries serves as the political, legal, religious, and economic order of Winderia. While a member of the Eight rules each city-state directly, they host members of the Church who are strongly involved in the administration, and rarely does a city-state leader act contrary to the interests of the Church.   The Church should not be confused simply with the worship or church of Mystra. The religion served as a common thread linking the city-states so closely tied to Mystra's spirit and power, and then a much larger and broadly-spanning organization developed around it into the Church of Mysteries. It is a theocracy governing the Confederation, but interests go beyond only those of religious zeal.   Clerics dominate the upper ranks of the Church of Mysteries. The head priest at each temple of Mystra may also be a member of the Church of Mysteries and serve as the representative in that city or town, or another member may be permanently stationed there to serve in that role. Regardless, the Church's designee wields great influence over the leaders and citizens. Other clerics, paladins, and acolytes fill out much of the ranks. Non-religious members include politicians, merchants, and other significant or powerful Winderians who choose to align themselves with the Church in exchange for influence.   The head priest of Mystra's temple in Mystryl, otherwise known as the High Priestess of Mystra, leads the Church of Mysteries and is therefore the de facto political leader of the city and the Confederation Arcanum at large. The High Priestess typically works closely with the Knight of Mystra and the Holy Guard in the governance of the city and the greater confederation.

The Midnight Mountain Incident

During the Midnight Mountain Incident, Isa Ereskin sacrificed herself to close the portal to the Void. She is presumed dead, and no successor has been chosen. With the loss of Salvation, it is unclear how Mystra will identify to the Church and approve a new High Priestess.
