Nala and Kriv Yarjerit are known as Daar’s parents. But what are they like?
They met at the university in Waterdeep. Their respective families had landed in this world many years ago and had migrated when their land appeared in Tauril. They saw how much better civilization was and did their best to establish themselves in the new world as fast as possible. Their strong work and study ethics was dutifully passed from generations to generations.
Nala and Kriv met at the university in Waterdeep. They both were intelligent and serious students. They decided to create their little family without compromising their academic career. That demanded a lot of coordination and effort, but the couple was motivated. They wanted to make a mark in Waterdeep, if not in the world, and their kids were the natural way to keep that imprint on the world going on. They wanted to pass on as much of their worldview as possible to their kids, and they taught them to work hard and be good always.
Kriv had been in Waterdeep some years when Nala arrived. He had been raised here and brought up in a middle-income ward. His parents had no other children and he felt lonely. They encouraged him to study and that’s how he ended up at the university. He is more of a strict person and pushes his children to do their best.
Nala was born away from Waterdeep. She was brought up by a family including her parents and one older sister. Her parents were well-off traders from a rich region (Calimshan). They were quite open and encouraged curiosity in their children. Nala showed interest in many domains, but quickly ended up wanting to learn more. The family travelled to Waterdeep to seek opportunities for the youngest, and found a good place for her. They had to travel back home afterwards though and Nala learned to make do in a strange city, mostly by focusing on her books to stay out of trouble. She did get a good amount of money from her parents before they left back home and she used it wisely.
Nala and Kriv are driven by two things : They want their job to be well made, so that students learn and that knowledge is spread. They haven’t really talked religion with any of their kids, mostly because it’s not the Yarjerit’s way. The second drive is to take care of their kids so that they become good and honest Yarjerit family members. By now both Nala and Kriv consider Waterdeep their home, even more, their safe place, stronghold, or “fäste”. They have relied on the city to protect them and house their love and ambitions. Always humbly, but they put in a lot of effort.
The couple are people full of reason. They started having children after Kriv got a job. They insisted on completing their academic track through the pregnancies. It took a bit more time for Nala, but Kriv took good care of the children, especially years 57-60 when Nala was completing her PhD. They wanted a bigger family though, and they juggle their careers with both taking care of home and family (on as equal a basis as possible - Kriv is strict, but very good at changing diapers).
Kriv is a silver dragonborn, while Nala is a blue dragonborn. They both made a clear choice for good, of course, regardless of their color origins.
Grandpa and Grandma Yarjerit have been present in the children’s lives. Kriv’s parents felt it was natural to help out babysitting the kids and helping the family when needed. However, they got Kriv a bit late in life, 32 and 35 years old. Daar would remember her Grandpa babysitting her, but any teenager conversations would have been with Grandma. The grands lived in South Ward and worked hard to get up in the Waterdhavian society. To be honest, they just stayed in the family house to spare money, but had gotten jobs a bit higher in rank by the time they became grandparents, and quite a lot of contacts along the way.
Nala’s parents were a lot further away. They visited maybe once or twice, but they didn’t keep contact. Nala got a letter from her sister that their parents had passed away one after the other in the 1470s. She then visited the family after Daar’s birth once in 1479, after having been mentioned in Donaar’s south adventures (her nephew). Aunt Sora is 48 years older than Daar. She went back in the south where she lives, but keeps some loose contact with Nala.
Biri and Jheri live in their quarters, visit home regularly. Donaar travels, has a room at his parents. Shedinn lives in his own studio in castle ward. Korinn lives in trade ward, in Shedinn’s old flat.
Torinn settled in his grandparents’ house after their death, abandoning his bad habit of sleeping in his office on the docks. His house is open to the family.
