Community Corner
While Meadowspring is technically a city, it is really made up of the surrounding boroughs. Central Meadowspring is not terribly large. The main part of Central Meadowspring is Community Corner, a large area dedicated to the running of the city. The main seat of government is in the High Mayor’s Hall, but some other government buildings are nearby, like the Commerce Building, the Warehouse, and the Meadowspring Centre for Cultural Affairs (which is a fancy way of saying ‘Halfling Party Planners’). Also, within Community Corner is the Militia House, which is less organized than their commander would like. However, when it comes to serious threats the members of the militia are more than competent; and follow orders strictly.
High Mayor's Hall is where the High Mayor of Meadowspring lives, and conducts the business of the city. All the burghers or the surrounding boroughs come to High Mayor’s Hall to help coordinate the effective trade of supplies, goods, and services to the residences of Meadowspring. The High Mayor is also responsible for the running of Central Meadowspring, and ensuring all services and physical resources are running smoothly. In addition to the burghers and the High Mayor, Meadowspring also has a head of trade, local businesses, resources, and cultural improvements.
The heads of trade, and local businesses both work out of the Commerce Building. In addition to the offices of the heads, the Commerce Building also houses the treasury, the money exchange, and the permit office. Quite often the two work in conjunction with each other but there is enough separation to warrant their own separation within the building itself.
Andry Brushgather is the head of trade, and as such she makes sure that the trade going out of and coming into Meadowspring is flowing smoothly and efficiently. The Halflings do not do much to gather new trade, happy to stick with their primary and historical sources. The Humans of Essillion, and the Dwarves of Shalehaven are their best customers, and have been for many years. It is not uncommon for there to be representatives of both races in the city, and they are treated very well.
Fildo Goldfind, as the head of local businesses, ensures those businesses are provided with the best care. From helping with stocking problems, to regulating (as much as Halflings can) fair practices, and hearing disputes. Fildo is not the kindest Halfling, but he does genuinely want what is best for Meadowspring and her businesses. Sometimes the stress gets to him and he just leaves for the day to eat some candy apples, or go fishing in the Avonshire River. All in all, he gets the job done to most Halfings’ satisfaction.
The Warehouse is a large building on the north end of Community Corner, and is where all the supplies from the surrounding boroughs, as well as any supplies from outside the city are stored. It is the responsibility of the head of resources to reallocate the supplies to the most needed areas, supplying all of Meadowspring with whatever is crucial at the time. The head of resources is actually a Human from Essillion by the name of Bester Hardknuckle. He has a knack for getting the best physical resources, from both the Dwarves and the Humans, and the surrounding areas also, in order to ensure Meadowspring buildings, tools, and supplies are all kept in top shape. He is excellent at organizing and redistributing supplies quickly and efficiently. It was a bit of a shock to see a Human named to the position, but Bester has proved himself invaluable. High Mayor Fatrabbit took a beating when Bester was named, but even his detractors applaud him for his foresight and open-mindedness.
Halflings like nothing better than to relax and celebrate after a hard day’s work (or an easy day’s work). The Meadowspring Centre for Cultural Affairs works hard to make sure that the citizens of Meadowspring have entertainment, fairs, local pastimes, and activities to keep their people happy. The Equinox and Solstice Fairs of Meadowspring are great parties, and many from miles away come to celebrate with them. People as far as Essillion, and even some ambitious merchants from Hollow's Point will make the trip. Even outside of the festivals and fairs, the people of Meadowspring like to have fun. Attractions such as Glenfellow Park, and The Crow's Nest allow citizens to relax, have fun and play games. Events like the Avonshire Fishing Competition draw great crowds, and the prizes get better each year. The official head of the Meadowspring Centre for Cultural Affairs is Gilbert Goodbarrel, but he could not do half as good a job without the help of his wife Pearl. Gilbert relies on his good-natured wife to help with ideas, the planning of certain events, and her calm demeanour, to keep him sane. They are a great team, and everyone knows that Pearl is the real heart of the success of the Centre.
Militia House is a small building within Community Corner, where the guards, militia, and small contingent of full-time soldiers stays or practices drills. Led by their Commander Ulmo High-hill, the militia of Meadowspring is surprisingly ready for action. Outside of the full-time soldiers, the members of the Meadowspring Militia do not typically take their drills very seriously. Ulmo would like to see more discipline, but he is resigned to accepting the favourable outcome. He is a devout follower of Lutien, and he knows that the Littleman will see to the city’s protection.
