Khan
The Khan was the ruler of Kūbai one of the four kingdoms of Taigol. While the title was also used to refer to the rulers of the individual clans within the land most use of the term beyond the region was to refer to the Khan of Khans who ruled them all.
Appointment
Appointment of the Khan occurs on two occasions; a challenge to the raining Khan or the death of the Khan.
Challenge
Anyone in Kūbai can challenge the Khan to rule by casting their chosen weapon into the ground before the ruler. Witnessed by others this challenge is binding and cannot be retracted obliging the Khan's court to name a date for the challenge at the earliest possibility.
Challenges occur atop the chosen steed of each champion and with a weapon of their choice forged specifically for the battle across an open field near the war camp. The gathered host form themselves around the edge of the wide arena denying any aid or entrance to the battlefield. Druids of the Hawk Druids watch in their animal forms sounding a deafening cry on the end of the battle when one of the two lies dead.
The victor is then pronounced the Khan but is at risk of being challenged instantly again. Contests for the Khanate can feature as many contenders as weapons are laid before and following a successful challenge there is often a subsequent grand challenge to decide the ruler.
Appointment
Following the death of a Khan the clans of Kūbai come together to elect their new sovereign. Summoned by the Hawk Druids the clans each place their treasure offering before their chosen Khan candidate who can challenge any other competitor to simple combat to claim their pile. At the end the candidate with the greatest horde is named the Khan of Khans.
