We Alphacians were given wings to soar the heavens. But it is from each of you that I learned how to walk the earth.
Lightbringer.
Alexandros Mengsk. The Arcturus Protocol. The being known as Alex has gone by several names and identities throughout the ages of Arkos. A secret science division of the
The Alphacians created Alex as an artificial Alphacian, naming him the Arcturus Protocol. In the event that the Alphacian civilization were to ever dissapear, Arcturus' programming would enable him to survive and force him to find a way of bringing the Alphacians back, by any means necessary.
Ignorant of his true origins, Arcturus grew up in the Alphacian capital of
Centralis, becoming the student of Conclave member Hythlodeaus and close friends with the Centralis Investigation Agency. Boasting great intelligence and magical capability, Arcturus was invited to sit on
The Conclave in the role of emissary; the youngest member ever to be granted a seat on the council.
After
The Cataclysm destroyed Centralis and claimed the lives of several of his friends, including his mentor, Arcturus wandered in grief for a number of years before he led a group of survivors from Centralis. Desperately wanting to care for his people, Arcturus took in a vast amount of Primordial Light energy and became the Lightbringer, an avatar that
The Solanians would later come to revere as a deity.
Unfortunately, not having control of his actions in this state caused Arcturus to utterly destory the remaining Alphacians in a burst of light; creating the barren island where
Sunfall Resort now rests. Mad with grief, Arcturus gave up his avatar status and began to fall victim to his programming, searching for the means to bring back his lost people.
In the Second Age, Arcturus would assume the identity of
Alexandros Mengsk, and founded the
Oreion Inquisition as a way of requiring resources and knowledge for his quest. He also had the Oreions adopt a very cautious and controlling view towards magic, as he did not want a repeat of when he inadvertently destroyed his surviving people as an avatar.
After faking his death as Alexandros and leaving Oreion to develop on its own, Arcturus began referring to himself as simply 'Alex', and began to work in earnest to bring back the Alphacians. Using a large, unsundered piece of Centralis, Alex constructed a large laboratory near the fey realm of Illanterra that he named Ouroboros. Here, he began a series of 'projects', making artifical memories of his fallen friends and attempting to place constructed Alphacians souls inside the bodies of strong but deceased individuals using Primoridal dark energy. It was during this time that Alex also adopted a goblin he would later come to care for as a daughter, naming her Frez.
One of the projects, codenamed Lazarus, bore fruit in the fact that the adventuring party known as the Sanctioned was resurrected through Alex's experimentation in
Crestfall Ruins. Wanting the project to fully succeed, Alex withheld the true nature of the project to the Sanctioned at first, though he began to care for the group despite his own programming. Over the course of the Sanctioned's adventures, Alex's programming began to take over his rational mind, at one point forcing him to try and 'reset' the Sanctioned so that their Alphacian souls would take over. After Ouroboros was destroyed in an attack by the mad
Lightsworn Janus, Alex confronted the Sanctioned at the top of Velant's Mt Bestyne. After deciding to spare him and breaking the hold his programming had over him, the Sanctioned worked with Alex to stop Janus from eradicating mortal life and undo the damage he himself had caused.
After journeying to
Serenia and helping to put an end to the Lightbringer threat once and for all, Alex wished to stay behind in Serenia for a period of time to help rebuild it after Janus' attack, wanting to finally fulfill his role of emissary between the Alphacians and Ancients. Being able to call a number of the Sanctioned his friends despite everything, Alex does not consider himself worthy of the second chance he was given, but has vowed to try and make the most of it by working for the betterment of the new Arkos...
