Oreion Inquisition

Beneath the lofty heavens, with tired hands we toil, In iron do we clad our hearts, and cloudless are our souls.   Yet every trial suffered, and every ally mourned, Do bring us solidarity, our spirits stand untorn.   Behold the boundless legions, whose wings embrace the sun Their fire rains down upon the land, until their course is run   By mercy of the Creator, the pride within us all Shall we be granted victory, for glory, Oreion.
  • Concluding Excerpt from the Oreion National Anthem
  •   During the Second Age, many commonfolk of the eastern continent of Solanus were set upon by powerful forces taking advantage of the chaotic nature of the new world after the Cataclysm. After mortalkind had more or less settled on Western Arkos' largest continent, seven powerful human houses warred among each other for hundreds of years over control of the land known as Oreion and its resources. That changed when Alexandros Mengsk brought the other six houses to heel with his massive army and tactical genius. Through military might and religious fevor towards the Creator he united the six houses with his own to form what is now known as Oreion Inquisition. Presently in the Third Age, the Inquisition bases much of its practices and policies on the expansionist mindset that Alexandros had when creating the Inquisition. This is evident in its conquering of central Solanus, as well as its attempts to take land from the Kingdom of Velant, Frigus, and the Crescent Empire in their numerous wars.   The largest countries on the western side of Arkos, most of Oreion’s topography is characterized by a rugged high plateau dotted with small mountain ranges. It also boasts some coastal plains and lowland river valleys leading to the ocean. Being located east of the Crescent Empire, the two countries are often at odds with each other over conflicting ideals. While the Crescent Empire tries to be more liberal and inclusive in its customs, the Oreion Inquisition tries to control all aspects of its subjects lives. Magic use is strictly regulated and controlled by the resident Inquisitors, and races other than human are usually prevented from acquiring high ranks in the inquisition. Non-human races are also sometimes objected to slavery, which the Inquisition tolerates to certain degrees. The Grand Inquisitor and their Overseers rule with absolute authority, with the Grand Inquisitor being viewed as having the position through divine appointment. The Inquisition proclaims a trepidation towards what they deem to be dangerous magic, which happens to be most forms of it. They also have a somewhat different view on what The Church of Creation should be, further dividing the two countries and their citizens.   The ruling body of government within the Inquisition is, of course, the Grand Inquisitor, along with a council of overseers. Each of the now five overseers is sent as a representative of one of the six houses that control Oreion, with the Grand Inquisitor ruling the sixth. To the common folk and outsiders of the Inquisition, it is known that the Grand Inquisitor is “chosen” by the creator himself to lead the country; a divine champion. In this way, the church and state are very interconnected in the Inquisition. Those of more privilege within the Inquisition know that the six houses, while swearing loyalty to the Grand Inquisitor, constantly try and gain more power than the other. This is how the Grand Inquisitor is truly chosen; through whichever house commands the most respect and influence. House Mengsk has mainly held this position for most of the Inquisition's history, beginning with Alexandros. The riverside capital of Victorum has served as the country's seat of power since Alexandros began its construction.   While Overseers are at the head of house political matters, and Inquisitors help maintain societal, magical and religious normality, a select few in the Oreion military are chosen to be Iudexs, the highest military rank possible. These judges are highly trained, battle-hardened warriors, responsible for functioning as chief arbiters and enforcers of Oreion law, and also commanding large portions of the Oreion army.
