Founded in 1486 DR, the small city in the heart of the Dalelands has had a short, but contentious history.

Politics

Driftriver is an independent city state which takes advantage of the loose border definitions of the region. The governing body is a Merchant Republic headed by the Doge, Clifford Blythe. Driftriver maintains sovereignty by maintaining the security and profitability of the Ashaba river's traderoutes, a major river highway which connects thousands of square miles of inland trade routes to the Sea of Fallen Stars. Driftriver projects military might through B.A.S.E. and a standing army of mercenaries, thus the city is able to protect itself and the nearby territory.

Driftriver is friendly to the nearby powers and frequently provides mercenaries, adventurers and problem solvers to the highest bidder. By working alongside the powers but never allowing any one to accumulate too much influence over the region Driftriver ensures her continued independence.

Economy

Driftriver is primarily a trade town focused on mercantile pursuits. The most powerful in the city are those with the means to buy whatever they want. Driftriver exports food grown on nearby farmlands, magic items, and adventuring services. Driftriver imports exotic goods, luxuries, adventuring supplies and information.
Due to the constant arrival of new travelers and merchants the city is a major marketplace in the Dalelands and it is actively advertised as a bastion of opportunity. Cheap land and favorable tax laws draw all types to seek a new life in Driftriver.

Many prominent individuals and groups have organized themselves into shared abodes or means of transport, identified as Estates within or outside Driftriver.
