Guildborough

"Guildborough isn't owned by the Eldermearan Guilds. Don't let them fool you; they are guests here."   ~Margrave Arronax Skinner, Margrave of Cambreath

Demographics

Mostly Human, a significant enclave of gnomes. The vast majority of citizens in this district are either in the Merchant Class or they work for them.

Government

Citizens vote for their electors by street, then the neighborhoods vote for their electors, and then the neighborhoods vote for their electors to represent them to the city. The District Council nominates Edlers to solve problems or sort out issues. The Guilds maintain some autonomy, claiming jurisdiction on 'internal matters,' which the local Sheriff respects.

Defences

The Sheriff has a bevy of deputies as needed, and maintains control of the City Watch in the area. He can also call up a Night Watch, which he is loathe to do, and generally works with the Guilds to maintain good relations. In a crisis, the Guilds may be convinced to lend their own security forces to the cause.

Industry & Trade

This district is home to the import markets that receive goods from all over The Maecodian Confederation, most particularly Eldermeare. Permanent residents are either local merchants, employees of those merchants, or hand-for-hire types that serve the incoming caravans.

Infrastructure

The roads in the district are the widest in the city, built to accommodate markets rather than for defense. Cisterns filter water from the Grasping River, and large granaries store the city's dole.

Guilds and Factions

The Cutlery Guild is based in the area, and often interferes with the rest of the Tenmasters Alliance's politicking simply out of a territorial urge. The Tackmaster is therefore the face of the Guilds in the city.   A local criminal gang known as the Pretty Ones pick around the edges of guild business with burglaries and protection rackets.

Points of interest

The Bright God - An expensive tavern and inn.   Rada's Armor and Shields - An armorer that specializes in quantity at a small sacrifice of quality.   The Guildhall: A grand timber and brick building, decorated with a glazed-tile roof. It contains a large meeting hall and several smaller rooms, and is shared amongst several local trade guilds.   The House of Hosusius: A grand stone-walled theatre, home of a female human named Ruda and her troupe of trained toads.   The Sapphire Flagon: A grand adventurer's inn built entirely from the hide and bones of an ancient blue dragon.

Tourism

The markets bring in Cambren from across the canton.

Architecture

Most of the buildings in the Guildborough are semi-permanent structures made from waterproofed canvass and wood and staked down into the dirt.
