Everyone wants to sleep at night and feel safe in their homes, but how many want to do what it takes to keep the tide of evil at bay? To stand in the cold and rain, waiting for battle while hunger gnaws at their bellies? Many wish to reap the rewards of a good harvest, but few care to remove the stones and till the fields for planting. The Lords’ Alliance fights the things that the shopkeeper in his bed has never even heard of. We remove threats before the town mayor even knows about it. We make bad things go away. Key representatives of the Lords’ Alliance include the canny Lord Dagult Never- ember of Neverwinter, the resplendent Lady Laeral Sil- verhand of Waterdeep, the grave Lord Taern Hornblade of Silverymoon, and the willful Queen Dagnabbet of Mithral Hall. With the aid of adventurers, the Lords’ Alliance thwarted Tiamat and her dragons. Alliance members aren’t about to let giants run roughshod over their settle¬ments and plunder their farmsteads. Alliance members call on adventurers of every stripe to attack and kill giants on sight, promising rewards of 200 to 500 gold pieces for each giant head brought to their gates. Rumors that the Lords’ Alliance was behind King Hekaton’s disappearance have not yet reached the alli¬ance leaders. Were the alliance to learn of these rumors, its leaders would quietly investigate the veracity of the claims while publicly dismissing them. Rogue agents within the Lords’ Alliance are rare, but defections have been known to occur. Also known as the Council of Lords, this group was formed to oppose the Zhentarim and the other sinister factions that seek to dominate the North through trade or treachery. Primarily a lawful good organization, it represents the interests of rulers of cities in the North and the Western Heartlands. The rulers of Waterdeep, Silverymoon, Neverwinter, and other free cities and towns in the region make up most of the Alliance. The various Lords differ on issues of trade, magic, relations with foreign nations such as Thay, and even the treatment of humanoids such as orcs and Goblins. The members of the Alliance are all equal in discussing Alliance matters, regardless of station outside the group. Given the increase in Zhentarim holdings in the North, the Lords have been trying to encourage other cities to join their cause, but so far such efforts have been met with little success. Luskan is notoriously independent and feels threatened by the new nation of the Silver Marches, one of the major members of the Alliance. The Shadow Thieves of Amn are the antithesis of the Alliance, and Calimshan does not consider the Zhentarim (or the Shadow Thieves, for that matter) to be serious threats to its trade. The agents of the Alliance include sophisticated bards, zealous paladins, talented sorcerers, and grizzled warriors. They are chosen primarily for their loyalty and then trained in observation, stealth, innuendo, and combat. Backed by the wealthy and the privileged, they carry quality Equipment (often disguised to appear common), and spellcasters tend to have a large number of scrolls with communication spells. The Alliance has a history of hiring adventurers, both to raid Zhentarim strongholds and to scout out sources of Zhentarim activity. Local adventuring groups with an interest in combating evil have quickly gained status and valuable contacts by their association with the Lords' Alliance, and just as quickly made enemies of the Black Network because of it. It is a lawful and essentially good alliance of the rulers of the cities of the North and the Western Heartlands. These include Waterdeep, Mirabar, Neverwinter, Silverymoon, Baldur's Gate, Elturel, Berdusk, Iriaebor, and Sundabar. The Lords' Alliance is not to be confused with the Lords of Waterdeep (see the Waterdeep chapter in A Grand Tour of the Realms), though members of the latter belong to the former. The Alliance communicates through official envoys by means of the trained pigeons of Piergeiron the Unmasked Lord of Waterdeep and by the magical arts of Khelben Blackstaff Arunsun. In this way Alliance agents have successfully coordinated military operations against Zhentarim annexation of an exclusive overland trade route, limiting that organization to its base in LLORKH. The Lords' Alliance is an alliance against the Zhentarim, and while the lords stand firm against the encroachment of the Black Network, they are less cohesive in other matters. The Zhentarim hope to use such differing attitudes towards trade, magic, and treatment of nonhumans to break the alliance, but to date have failed. The agents of the Lords; Alliance are varied, and usually swear their loyalty first to one particular lord, then to the Lords' Alliance as a whole. Still, there are a number of adventuring companies and paladins who strike against the Zhentarim in the name of the Lords; Alliance. The coastal city of Luskan, north of Neverwinter, is not a member of this group, as it receives most of its goods by sea, places a fierce value on its independence that precludes any firm alliances, and is noted for not being above a little trade raiding of its own. The kingdoms of Amn and Calimshan are indifferent to the alliance. Perk 1+. You receive a simple income for your work for the city, earning 5sp per full day of work you do. This is upgraded to 1gp per day at Rank 3, and to 2gp per day at Rank 10. Every 2 days of such employment also counts as 1 day of the Gaining Renown Downtime action. Well Connected: Perk 2+. In a short period of time, those who work in the City of Splendors' bureaucracies and back rooms make a fine allotment of contacts and sources of information. You are considered to have established a Bureaucratic Information Network, at the Small size. This increases by one step for each additional Rank you gain in this faction; instead of increasing a Network by one size, you may also choose to establish a new Information Network at the Small size instead.Lords' Courts (Title)
