Hektanpolis Province

Hektanpolis province is the southernmost of Aurea's mountain provinces, consisting of a long narrow valley through the southern Dragonpeaks. The valley is humid with usually mild weather, and it's thick forests and bright green meadows contrast greatly with many of the dryer surrounding regions. The empire's vain attempts to retake the Southern Passes to the east have given the area a large military presence, making orc raids and organized bandit groups almost entirely absent. This has had the benefit of making it one of the safest and most prosperous of the empire's remaining provinces.   The land here is moist and fertile, providing great conditions for agriculture, including large amounts of grapes used to produce some of the empire's best wines. Like most of the mountain provinces, mining is common in Hektanpolis, and much of the metal produced there goes towards making weapons and armor for the imperial army. There are also many large marble quarries, and the stone is used in unusual quantities in many of the province's buildings. Trade also trickles south from High Rift and west along The Old Road to and from Thelegon, though the latter is often cut off by the various hobgoblin armies active around the southern edges of the Dragonpeaks.   The province's eponymous capital Hektanpolis is one of the only cities in the empire to have grown since The Purge. Once somewhat of a backwater, the city's population swelled with refugees during the fall of the southern passes. The newcomers largely did not disperse to other areas, finding work providing services to the arriving soldiers. The city's walls were expanded around the refugee encampment, and the city is now divided into the old city and the new city, the latter largely remaining a tightly packed group of makeshift shacks.
