Saint Louis the Pious

"The Lord's will is a compass guiding our hearts through the storm of life. It is not always easy to follow, but in surrendering to His divine plan, we find purpose and strength beyond our own. Each step we take in faith is a testament to His grace, for even in the shadows, His light will illuminate the way forward." -Saint Louis the Pious
Saint Louis the Pious, born Louis Charlesson, is one of the most revered figures in Outremer’s history. Alongside Norman "The Lionheart" de Normandie and Robert the Strong, he is celebrated as one of the legendary heroes who shaped Outremer's destiny. Louis, with his wife Elesis the Saint, would go on to found House Ginemiéres, known as the "House of the Saint," the third and final great house of Outremer. Together, Louis and Elesis not only saved the realm but redefined its spirit, ushering in a golden age of faith, unity, and power.

Louis’ ascension to the throne came at a time of turmoil, during the deadliest civil war in Outremer's history, the War of Greed. Known for his profound piety and unbreakable will, he was blessed by Solomon - God of Life himself, granted unparalleled virtue and wisdom in his pursuits. Sparing his foes, sinless in his actions, and guided by unwavering devotion, Louis exemplified righteousness in all aspects of life. His compassion was only rivaled by his might, and these qualities made him a beacon of hope and strength for the people of Outremer.

Alongside his wife Elesis the Saint, Louis orchestrated a turning point in Outremer’s history. They jointly launched the Sixth Crusade, one of the most decisive campaigns against the Orc Empire of the Broken Wills led by Hoglik the Jaded. The orc empire had taken the lands of the sacred World Tree Leviair, which was the heart of the Crusader States of Leviair and a symbol of Solomon’s light. Together, Louis and Elesis defeated the Broken Wills, liberating Leviair and restoring the Crusader states. This victory was said to have caused a miraculous event: the rebirth of the Sacred Pools, which sprang forth at every World Tree. These pools marked the beginning of a new era, allowing for the creation of saints for the first time in half a century, amplifying the reach of the Solomonid faith across the continent of Oros.

Louis and Elesis would become known as the only joint rulers of Outremer, both reigning as Saint Emperor and Saint Empress. They were equal in stature, with each supporting and empowering the other in their divine mission. Outremer thrived under their leadership, with Louis' immense strength and Elesis' unmatched wisdom forming the cornerstone of their reign. Elesis was as much a saint as Louis, wielding a divinity that complemented his pious might. Together, they restored and strengthened Outremer, reinvigorating its spiritual and political core after centuries of decline.

Their combined reign, Outremer’s longest and most prosperous, spanned an astounding 278 years. Louis himself would live to the extraordinary age of 302, his life extended by divine blessings as a testament to his unmatched faith and the sanctity of his rule. Through this extended reign, Louis and Elesis saw Outremer rise to unprecedented heights, their legendary deeds and unbreakable bond forever immortalized in Outremer's history. They became not only rulers but symbols of hope, faith, and valor, forever enshrined alongside the fearless Norman the Lionheart and the mighty Robert the Strong as Outremer's greatest heroes.

Personal history

Saint Louis the Pious, born Louis Normanson, was a legendary hero, warrior, and saint of Outremer whose legacy was marked by humility, boundless compassion, and an unbreakable devotion to the Solomonid faith. Louis was born amidst a remarkable journey, the son of Charles, a valiant knight who sought the Holy Grail alongside his lifelong friend, Norman. This quest, one that would span decades, shaped Louis’ childhood, teaching him values of courage, perseverance, and piety from an early age.

The path that led to Louis’ sainthood was unconventional and filled with hardship. His journey began when his father, Charles, and Norman set out on an epic quest across distant lands to locate the elusive Grail. During their travels, they saved a prince of the Yang Empire, gaining the favor of its Emperor, who offered Princess Yang Xinxiang, a bold and adventurous woman, as a bride to Charles. Her addition to their group brought new strength and grace, and she became an invaluable ally in their journey to find the Grail. When both Princess Xinxiang and Norman’s wife were expecting children in 11974 AC, it was a time of joyous anticipation for the party. That year, Charles welcomed his son, whom he named Louis, while Norman welcomed a daughter named Elesis.

As Louis and Elesis grew, they adopted the party’s adventurous lifestyle, training in swordsmanship and learning survival skills as they traveled. By the age of eleven, both children had already faced and overcome numerous foes, from wild beasts to Orcs and undead, and even Demons. Their skills matured as they did, and their courage became undeniable, marking them as prodigies who would one day accomplish great things. Shortly before their twelfth year, Charles and Norman finally discovered the Holy Grail, the object of their quest for so many years. However, rather than drinking from the Grail to gain sainthood themselves, Charles and Norman made the ultimate sacrifice by offering its blessings to their children, making Louis and Elesis saints at an age unprecedented in Outremer’s history. Bestowing sainthood upon the children granted them divine abilities, marking them as chosen by Solomon - God of Life and sealing their destinies as warriors of the faith.

Following this pivotal moment, Charles and Norman took the children to Vlunia, within the Magical Kingdom of Saphery, where they could study under the tutelage of skilled magicians. However, Charles’ life came to an end soon after, leaving Norman to fulfill their shared dream of returning home to Outremer. In 11990 AC, as the War of Greed tore Outremer apart in the most brutal civil conflict of its history, Norman, his wife, and Princess Xinxiang all sacrificed their lives in a surprise attack, protecting Louis and Elesis from certain death. The attack left the young saints devastated, orphaned at sixteen and consumed with anger toward Outremer, a kingdom they blamed for the loss of their loved ones. However, as they continued their journey through Outremer, Louis began to see the Solomonid faith in its most profound form: its holy sites, devout followers, and the enduring hope it inspired among the people. Louis and Elesis found themselves embracing Solomon’s teachings, becoming devout believers who carried on the legacy of their fathers.

The War of Greed had reduced Outremer to a kingdom fueled by greed and bloodshed, with its nobles embroiled in a vicious struggle for the throne. Sacred Pools, sources of divine blessing for saints, had long since dried up, and Outremer was without saints to lead or protect it. However, with the arrival of Louis and Elesis, Outremer once again had saints within its borders. Elesis received a vision, guiding her to the location of a new Sacred Pool and prophesying a path to save their broken kingdom. Together, Louis and Elesis journeyed across Outremer, spreading hope and protecting the innocent from the ravages of war. Louis fought with unmatched skill, yet he spared those who opposed him, winning the admiration and loyalty of both allies and former foes. Knights who had lost faith in Outremer’s nobility found renewed purpose, seeing in Louis a beacon of divine righteousness. His mercy inspired countless knights, who joined him on his quest to heal the fractured land, pledging their lives to his cause.

For eight long years, Louis and Elesis worked to end the War of Greed without taking the life of a single Outremerian, relying on their faith, skill, and wisdom to prevail over any challenge they faced. By the war’s end, the nobles of Outremer had seen the pair as the divine saviors of the kingdom, and in a rare display of unity, they approached Louis, asking him to take the throne. However, he declined the title, saying humbly, “I am no man without my maiden, let alone emperor.” When they asked Elesis, she replied, “I am a woman that is nothing without my husband, let alone empress.” Still determined, the nobles suggested that Louis and Elesis rule together as joint sovereigns, and, moved by the pleas of the people, the pair accepted, becoming the first and only joint rulers in Outremer’s history. Hailed as Saint Louis the Pious and Elesis the Saint, they were crowned Saint Emperor and Saint Empress, guiding the empire into an era of restoration and prosperity.

Shortly after their ascension in 11998 AC, Elesis located the Sacred Pool she had envisioned. However, in a shocking act, she destroyed it before a crowd of knights, who, enraged, sought to strike her down. Yet, her divine aura rendered her unharmed, and their realization of their own greed led them to their knees in repentance. Elesis explained that they had merely shifted their desires toward the Sacred Pool rather than forsaking their greed altogether. She proclaimed that the world trees were interconnected and urged the knights to save the World Tree Leviair, now under the control of the Orc Overlord, Hoglik the Jaded.

Thus began the crusade to liberate the World Tree Leviair from the Broken Wills. From 12001 AC to 12008 AC, Louis and Elesis led the Sixth Crusade, fiercely battling against the orc warhost. In a climactic confrontation, they jointly defeated Hoglik, restoring the Crusader States of Leviair and revitalizing the world tree. With the reestablishment of the Sacred Pools across the lands of Oros, the faith of Solomonid flourished. The emergence of hundreds of saints marked a new era, and Louis and Elesis became revered as the paragons of the faith, leading Outremer into a golden age.

Louis and Elesis enjoyed a long and prosperous reign, during which Elesis became known for her wisdom and piety. She passed away in 12136 AC at the age of 162, leaving Louis heartbroken. He chose never to remarry and continued to rule Outremer until his death in 12276 AC, at the extraordinary age of 302—the longest reign in Outremer’s history. His longevity was attributed to both his deep piety and his hidden Yang heritage, a secret known only to a few.

Together, Louis and Elesis had many children, founding House Ginemiéres—the third and final great house of Outremer, alongside House de Normandie and House Robertine. Their legacy lived on, shaping the future of Outremer and the Solomonid faith, a testament to their unwavering devotion, courage, and love.
