Spider

These eight-legged, scuttling bugs come in a range of sizes from tiny swarms to the giant spiders that inhabit the Screaming Desert and Plane of Earth. Some relatively skilled magic users can summon Chthonic Giant Spiders with a Summon Nature's Ally II spell, while others sometimes have smaller spiders as familiars. Due to their magical presence, venom and weird anatomy, spiders are often mistrusted, and in the more paranoid districts they are often treated as spies. Even common urban spiders, who are generally considered harmless, are still often viewed as unwanted pests: laying eggs, building webs and alarming those who fear them.

In Mythology

The spider is the sacred animal of Panopticon, the Eyes and Arms. Like Panopticon, spiders have many arms and many eyes, and they weave circular webs that trap their prey.

Interview Excerpts: You see a huge spider in your room, what do you do?

RESPONSES
Masons
"My most pressing order of business, of course, would be to take matters up with our guard captain vis-a-vis, if you’ll pardon the phrase, a bug report. Our system is intended to preclude such breaches."
-- Subvizier Aloysius Mason.
Dargent-Laureats
"I have a very strict talk with the staff."
-- Vizier Victor Dargent-Laureat.
"Aw, poor little guy. I’ll take him down to the garden. Put him on a flower bush."
-- Viziera Satine Dargent-Laureat.
Ironsides
"In the Big Game Lodge, nothing’s ‘huge’ until it’s 15 feet or more, hah! So I’d take that spider as a trophy for my wall!"
-- Vizier Balthazar Ironside.
"…I… get rid of it."
-- Subvizier Agamemnon Ironside.
"It’s safer here than most other places, but only until my father finds it. If I can, I’ll find a way to smuggle it somewhere safe."
-- Katib Menelaus Ironside.
"Never found a spider big enough to be worth fighting, but we have a zero-tolerance policy on tresspassing so I gotta kill it."
-- Katiba Britomart Stargazer-Ironside.
Stargazers
"Regular or magic spider? The former I ignore; the latter I catch for study."
-- Vizier Leopold Stargazer.
"I can crush it with the staff. No need to waste the energy channel on a minor pest."
-- Viziera Andromeda Stargazer.
"Find whichever servant let it in. I keep my room spotless."
-- Subvizier Pollux Stargazer.
"Never found a spider big enough to be worth fighting, but we have a zero-tolerance policy on tresspassing so I gotta kill it."
-- Katiba Britomart Stargazer-Ironside.

"I shall do my best to usher it outside. Cassie hates spiders."
-- Katib Castor Stargazer.
"Ah, I hate spiders. It’s very embarrassing. If Cassie’s not around, this is one of the few times I will call a servant."
-- Katiba Cassiopeia Stargazer-Greenskin.

"Is it here to make a request?"
-- Bartleby.
Dargents
"Destroy the spider and fire the maids."
-- Vizier Richard Dargent.
"Discern its aura. Learn its secrets. Find who sent it."
-- Viziera Guinevera Dargent.
"I have a very strict talk with the staff."
-- Subvizier Victor Dargent-Laureat.
"Aw, poor little guy. I’ll take him down to the garden. Put him on a flower bush."
-- Subviziera Satine Dargent-Laureat.

"Huge spiders could be spies or familiars, so you can’t be too careful. I’d probably try to usher them out as painlessly and politely as possible."
-- Katib Hugo Dargent.
"I tell my mum, and she tells my dad, and he makes sure it never happens again!"
-- Katiba Scarlett Dargent.

"Target practice."
-- Lindie Asklepa.
"Did you know that the spider's a sacred animal of one of the forbidden gods? Wait, don't tell anyone I said that. But, yeah, Hugo's pretty sure It-And-They are being secretly worshipped by one of the other noble families. I guess that could mean it's some kind of spy. I mean, I think Panopticon's on our side but, well, I'd probably still tell Hugo so he could take it outside before Lindie saw it and got... stabby."
-- Connie Furr.
"Food."
-- Voltaire.
Carterholds
"Stealth-kill practice?"
-- Katiba Rouge Carterhold.
Bakerstreets
"It’ll be in one of the traps, and I’ll take it for analysis."
-- Vizier Cobbler Bakerstreet.
"...[mimes crushing something]..."
-- Subviziera Diana Bakerstreet-Underhand.
"PUNT. That is a problem for whatever’s under my window now."
-- Katib Cody Bakerstreet.
"Keep an eye on it. Don’t let it know it’s been rumbled. Let’s see where it goes."
-- Katiba Wiggin Bakerstreet.
Underhands
"...[mimes crushing something]..."
-- Katiba Diana Bakerstreet-Underhand.

-- Ex-Subvizier James Baharat.
  "I’m gonna name them Persimmon."
-- Beautiful Baharat Guard.
"Oh, that’s Chuck. He hangs out sometimes. Gives me someone to talk to, though he doesn’t talk back."
-- Martini.
Brasseyes
"I speak spider. We’ll find out why it’s here."
-- Katiba Grimoire Brasseyes.
Darktusks
"Take its legs off. Chose the wrong room, fucker."
-- Mirze Rifi Darktusk.
Greenskins
"It should not be here. It will be crushed. I would rather not risk that it lays eggs."
-- Vizier Kronk Greenskin.
"Ah, I hate spiders. It’s very embarrassing. If Cassie’s not around, this is one of the few times I will call a servant."
-- Subvizier Cassiopeia Stargazer-Greenskin.

Jackalslicers
"I will ask a servant to remove it with care."
-- Viziera Atkin Jackalslicer.

-- Katib Fennec Jackalslicer.

"Bite! Squish! Eat legs. Always win."
-- Stubby.
Shajaras
"I do dabble a little in some Drow harvest techniques."
-- Vizier Hali Shajara.

-- Viziera Cassilda Shajara.
Brambleites
"Fear not, my allies! I shall nimbly spring ‘twixt this fearsome stranger and my charged wards, the better to ward off any ill intent!"
-- Bugsby Cottontail.
"Did you know that the spider's a sacred animal of one of the forbidden gods? Wait, don't tell anyone I said that. But, yeah, Hugo's pretty sure It-And-They are being secretly worshipped by one of the other noble families. I guess that could mean it's some kind of spy. -- James Baharat.

"Oh, that’s Chuck. He hangs out sometimes. Gives me someone to talk to, though he doesn’t talk back."
-- Martini.

"Since Brambleson’s gifts generally allow me to cross the city unpursued, I can be pretty sure that any spiders in the further down lodgings would be unaware of my true identity. It would be safe for me to leave it only… well, if Lindie is with me it may be safer for the spider if I were to take it outside."
-- Vulpix.
"Move sharp tools where they won’t hurt the wee thing and leave it to its web. Silent crafters are welcome in my workshop."
-- Warren Furr.
"It’s probably lost. I’ll escort it back to the Dwarven settlements. They like spiders up there."
-- Winnie Furr.

-- Pairaka.
Undergazette
"That depends how scarce the food is."
-- Krona Tailfeather.
"Target practice."
-- Lindie Asklepa.

"It’s all good. Plenty of room to go around, bug. We’re all just tryna get by."
-- Tito.
Yvette & her Handmaidens
"Why, I suppose I shall have to find someone to come in and remove it for me. I couldn’t possibly get dressed while an unpaying creature was watching."

-- Yvette Vixois.
