Skulta

The Red Knife, Kynazdottir, Beastmother

Skulta is the Jolnir gottyan of the red moon of the same name, known as Tol in the Kalmasi trade tongue. She is the eldest, misshapen daughter of Ragna and Kynaz. Despite her malformation, she is believed to be the favorite daughter of Kynaz and his agent watching over Ashar when he strays far away from the world on his travels.

Skulta is a fierce goddess and strongly independent, like her father. She is prayed to most by Jolnir women who desire freedom from the traditional roles assigned to them in their cultures, especially warrior women and those women with strong magical skills that refuse to join the Daenir or Saedir lodges. She is also prayed to by those women who wish to end their pregnancies or who are caught in desperate and repressive situations. With the gottun Eltan, she is believed to be mother to the Hverskepnir, the skinchanger tribe of outcasts. In most Jolnir belief, she is also the mother of all those the Jolnir deem monsters, including the drakir and ettnir.

Skulta is portrayed on altars as a small woman with a hunched back, dressed in skins and holding hooked knives outstretched in both hands in a defiant pose. Those women who especially favor her tattoo a red, left pointing triangle behind their left shoulders.
