Thalkunir

The Thalkunir are the largest Jolnir tribe and most territorially widespread aside from the Vandir. Their lands range along the southern seaboard of Heimval from just east of Rotskjoldland, to west of the Grunmark peninsula, dominated by the Rikja of Jonagval. Their lands consist of a series of ancient rikjar ruled by the dominant clans of the area. The territories of these rikja all have the Gulf of Eltan as their southern border and the southern plains of the vast Yfirland as their northern borders, usually separated from each other by rivers or ancient boundary stones.

Claiming the gottun Thalkun as their direct ancestor, their tribe is named for him and hold him above all other gottir, though the gottir Thera, Eltan and Ragna are also held in high regard. It is widely acknowledged that the Thalkunir produce the most skilled warriors. The Vandir may be large and ferocious and those to the east and west may be richer, but the Thalkunir, man for man and often woman for woman, are true battle masters. Like their patron gottun, they favor the axe, though these come in many forms, from single hand axes, to glaives and halberds as well as the uniquely Thalkunir axe-like sword called the falga. However they are trained to be skilled in a range of weaponry and none at all.

However doughty their warriors, they have mostly fought each other, or fended off and retaliated against raids of the Vandir to the north. Until the last century, they also controlled the Grunmark peninsula, conquered long ago by Fridhov Bludhand, but then lost nearly two centuries later by his despised heir, Danwar den Ulykege (Danwar the Unlucky). That loss of face as well as the Skjoldir tribe's loss of Rotskjoldland to the foreign Kalmasans has caused a major shift in thinking within the Thalkunir kingdoms.

Currently in the great councils of the Thalkunir leaders, there is talk of joining forces to conquer Rotskjoldland and win back both Thalkunir honor and Jolnir honor as well. This is supported by both the Daenir and Saedir sisterhoods, though it is believed that they do not favor Thalkunir rule as opposed to the rule of another tribe, as long as the foreigners are driven from Heimval.
