Sorella System
VNY's notes:
One of three ore-mining systems that make up the Three Ellas Run in the Freeworlds Territory. You start loading up ore shipments at Pernella System, then visit Dorella, then Sorella, and then drop the load off at Tavya System, which has the good grace to be on the main spine of the Procopian Shipping Lane.
Davish Tam and I visited the Sorella System on our most common case type, which is a "Missing Persons" search for someone trying to track down lost family or friends who dropped out of contact during the past couple of wars. It's rough work sometimes, a real slog sometimes, but more often than not we manage to at least give our clients enough of an answer to move on in their lives.
Sometimes we even get the happiest of happy endings: everyone is okay now, safe and healthy, they simply did not know how to tackle the task of reconnecting.
One of our first dozen or so cases gave us a strong reason to check out Upper Aurlan, which is the starport in low orbit around the airless rock planet Aurlan here in Sorella System. No worries! We did a reasonable amount of preliminary research, made travel arrangements, and spent most of the trip divvying up which of us would handle what portion of the records searches. It makes more sense to me for Davish to chat up some municipal types at the deli or cafeteria nearest the official area, while I go to the local HoloNet offices to dig through their archives for classified advertisements and social notices.
"What are you smuggling today?" the Customs flunky asked us. Not angry, hostile, suspicious, or even anticipatory in tone -- bored, if anything.
Uhh. Nothing?
That annoyed him into paying more attention to me. And then to Davish. And then to both of us. And then to trying to disassemble our sabers, because he thought they were fakes being used to smuggle data crystals or something.
New career highlight: having to yell across the inspections hall for some Fortune Hunters to come tell this lunatic that I am Not That Kind of Monk. Having a Fortune Hunter pat my hand and then assure the head of Customs that no, Ysadora is not a smuggler of any sort, she's not that clever for one thing, she would make a terrible criminal. She is about as subtle as a Gamorrean at a luau.
Well, thank you very much!
Davish and I can still make each other crack up by doing our Bad Hula Dancing impression, actually.
After he got us through that mess, Big John oh-so-patiently advised us that mostly only smugglers stop at Upper Aurlan. "Legitimate Business" does not have time to go further in-system to Cirra or Fithpa, it's either get digital business done at Upper Aurlan or take physical goods all the way down to Sorella herself. "Business", as in, non-law-bending business, either picks up an ore shipment at the edge of the system or else goes to Cirra and Fithpa.
That's the kind of tidy organization we eventually came to expect on the Three Ellas Run. Working our way up to that expectation, though, that was a special learning curve.
But it worked out okay. We picked up Mildred_Krebs at a warehouse auction along with some other office supplies, and we convinced some local "legitimate businessfolks" that it's in their best interest to see Mystic Mob Investigations do a little work in the neighborhood.
Geography
This system's makeup does not in any way warn a body of the oddity further along the Three Ellas Run.
The system primary is Sot, a M8 V Red Dwarf star.
The closest planet in orbit is Sorella, which has been working on its "low oxygen" problem for hundreds of years now. Sorella has one moon named Sceptri.
Three rock planets fill the next three orbits, and none of them have natural moons. Cirra is the innermost of the trio; it hosts a lot of refineries built into the surface of the world, while cargo storage platforms orbit above with space elevator tethers connecting them to the surface. Fithpa, a larger planet, is being mined by eight or ten mining companies. They are all united on two points: One, they will not permit one of the major corporations to set so much as one pick or drillhead onto Fithpa. Two, anyone who wants to do business with any of them better show up with a cargo hold of goods to trade, either consumables or safety gear. All transactions on Fithpa are at least partially barter rather than credit-based.
And then there's Aurlan, a boring rock planet officially used as a scrapyard for the long haul industry's repairs. And Upper Aurlan in orbit, home of Legitimate Business Transactions.
I think Sorella is the only one of the Three Ellas that does not have an asteroid belt. Even Doris System has an asteroid belt, not that they mine it.
At any rate, the outermost two worlds orbiting Sot are ice worlds. Seani has a couple of moons, Syntha has one. I think some methane ice mining is in progress and I know there's nitrogen ice mining in progress, but it is not enough to export much.
