Tallaan System
Holopedia Galactica entry:
Tallaan System is the historical crossroads for Shapani Bypass, Giju Passage, and Procopian Shipping Lane within the Freeworlds Territory region of the Tapani Imperium. In the time between 15 Telona 12728T and 1 Yelona 12728T, a logistical plan was laid out to relocate Radiance Station from Tallaan System to Tamber System rather than build a new official Customs and Transshipping Station at this central point.
In addition to industries centered around the shipping and passenger transit that passed through the system every day, Tallaan boasted a number of vehicle manufacturing companies until 2 Selona 12724T. On the anniversary of the hyperspace missile barrage which killed a third of the system's population, all ships and orbital stations pause motion for five standard minutes, running all lights at their brightest setting as if drawing away missile fire.
Geography
The system primary is Kori, a K1V Orange Main Sequence star.
The closest-orbiting body in this system, Cenope, is a typical silicate crust rock planet, if unusually large for a solid planet orbiting so close to its primary. It has no natural moons. Since its orbital period is only a tenth of a standard year, few companies over the centuries have made any attempt to mine. Even in the most ideal circumstances, all equipment would have to be heavily shielded and reinforced due to the strong gravity and heavy radiation of this world -- but many business ventures have theorized that the world must contain large deposits of dense isotopes, potentially suitable for refinement into certain types of hyperspace fuel.
Tallaan is a terrestrial world with healthy oceans, forests, plains, and several "enclave" cities all managed by the Tallaani Trade Commission which is the local government. Tallaan has two moons, Tanzarn and Tethorix.
Tallaan's local year is 355 standard days long.
Niazuno is a rock planet that has been heavily mined over the past millenia for any usable ore. Its single moon, too, has been mined to the point of exhaustion. What remained by the rise of the Galactic Empire was considered too disorganized to refine. Some of the old mines have been sealed and converted to storage bays for Tallaani vehicle manufacturers as they build up stock for a bulk shipment. A wanderer would expect to find duracrete-lined irregular caverns full of sublight tractors or drilling machines, low-end family repulsorcraft, or other such everyday devices ... and, of course, some irate site security!
Curn is an ice planet with a thinly populated trio of planetary rings -- an unusual combination throughout the Galaxy. Since it has one small moon, some astrocartographers hypothesize that Curn must have originally had a much slower rotational speed: matter accreted into small chunks rather than accumulate into a single larger body. Others insist that this theory is nonsense -- that Curn's planetary rings are the remainder of past mining operations conducted in the low gravitational field of a stable orbit.
Lleron, the outermost orbiting planet of this system, is an ice planet with no natural moons. Instead its orbital bodies include several shipyards (currently under extensive repair) sized to do work on extremely large starships -- including capital ships and the largest cruiseliners.
It also hosted Radiance Station, the official gateway to and from Tapani Sector for travellers on Giju Passage and Procopian Shipping Lane. Radiance Station was lucky enough to be eclipsed by Lleron and partially shut down for sensor maintenance when the missiles of the Final Solution dropped out of hyperspace. The staff of Bureau of Ships and Services died in the second salvo but managed to get an emergency signal out to the rest of Tallaan System to raise emergency shields and cut off hypernavigational broadcasts. Radiance Station was repaired within four standard years despite the complications of the Tapani Civil War. However, intrasystem traffic control never returned to Radiance from its distributed use of several facilities cobbled from the Tallaani Shipyards network.
The Shipyards
The Tallaani Shipyards were established in 8720T in reaction to the opening of the Giju Passage trade route. Its first functional platform continues to be the most important component shipyard, located at the midpoint between Tallaan and its largest moon, Tanzarn.
No individual component of the several hundred orbital docks is original to this founding. At any given time throughout its existence, roughly one-tenth of each dock cluster was being dismantled for recycling while another tenth -- updated, revamped, sometimes completely redesigned -- was in its final stages of fabrication and inspection.
VNY's notes:
I wish the Holopedia Galactica senior editors would come back to this entry and pin to the top an unambiguous advisory: Of all starcraft travel opportunities in the Galaxy, this is among the top three for keeping your vessel strictly predictable. For more than a hundred years, Bureau of Ships and Services Traffic Control in this system kept a great safety record despite complex, high-volume intrasystem traffic at all hours. And when several uncommunicative objects dropped out of hyperspace on 2 Selona 12724, following the trails of past travel by hyperspace craft, the BuShips staff ignored their own emergency evacuation protocols in order to warn everyone else.
In honor of their choice, the Tallaani Trade Commission has registered a notification with the Order of Solicitors and Corps of Rangers that transit deviation is a serious offense in the Tallaan System.
As in: do any hotdogging, get shot out of space.
I am not entirely comfortable with this law, ethically-speaking. I do not see how it could be sustainable over a ten-year period. I worry that would-be champions are sitting around in their non-Bureau vehicles with manipulator digits twitching on triggers, glaring at all other traffic in hopes of the slightest excuse to fire.
But nobody has asked me to go talk sense into the TTC. Which means I would do more harm than help if I try anyway.
If you go dirtside to Tallaan, try to stop by the Black Rose Pub around the middle of local afternoon for a meal. Their seasonal stew is usually great and their jukebox is usually broken, so it might not be terribly loud in there.
If your travels won't bring you any further in-system than the Shipyards orbiting Lleron, though, get directions to a diner called Electric Clove. They make these conical baked-then-fried savory turnovers that are absolutely divine, and for a cheap enough price that I had to check twice to confirm that a safety inspector had ever been around. The protein components may be vat-based, the vegetables and spices always bargain bin surplus from an abandoned shipment, but the whole thing is great! And filling! And I can feed an entire squadron of disgruntled ruffians for less than a single meal at Occam's Razor.
