Thelyan

Thelyan is a small country on the edge of the Thes'set Desert, which lies directly to the west.
It is renowned as a place of higher learning, knowledge, and scholarly pursuits. Its capital city, the illustrious Library City of Syndwend, is home to many of the most elite universities and scholarly institutes in the universe. The language of Sandwind also originates from Thelyan.

The country has a rolling, hilly desert landscape, but is evenly interspersed with forests, greenery, and true-earth areas. All of the natural areas of Thelyan are very well cared for and maintained. Nearly all of these areas are also highly controlled and planned.

Most of the larger cities of Thelyan are closed, but the inhabitants generally do not have any aversion to outdoor, true-air spaces. There are also many true-air towns and smaller cities.

The country welcomes foreigners, especially to its highly exclusive universities, but very rarely grants any foreigner citizenship.

Structure

Thelyan is ruled by a small, elite group of scholars, called The Academians, who make up the land's ruling government.
Within the Academians, higher ranks are the Savants, of which there are usually 5 - 10 appointed members, the Polymaths, of which there typically 3 - 5, and finally the Head Librarian, which only one individual may hold at a time.
Each of these ranks are used as prestigious titles that are then placed before the individual's name.

Culture

Thelyani people revere the pursuit of knowledge. They are raised to be curious, open-minded, and focused on intellectual pursuits. The arts, education, and personal freedom and individualism are highly valued. Books and literature are inextricably entwined with the culture of Thelyan, and is a great and lifelong passion for most Thelyanis.
They also famously value documentation and the recording and compiling of data. Thelyan is known to have the most extensive archives and histories in the world, perhaps the universe. Their vast system of amassed information ranges from the universal to minute scale. For example, they have a database record of every single plant in the country.
Thelyani people are highly loyal to their country. While many of them travel, most citizens consider themselves immensely fortunate to have been born in Thelyan.

Assets

Most of Thelyan's wealth comes from its dominating intellectual culture. Thelyan has a constant stream of commissions, study requests, research projects, and much more that it accepts - extremely selectively - from all over the universe, flooding in on all manner of subjects, making employment as a scholar in Thelyan exceptionally lucrative.
And of course, individuals from all over the universe attend the countless universities of Thelyan, another source of the country's economic income.
Although these sectors are certainly its best known, Thelyan has many other flourishing sources of wealth and income. A considerable chunk of Syndwend city's lower dimension is dedicated to factories, industrial zones, and Moving-City docking. It surprises many people to learn that Syndwend is one of the busiest and most profitable Moving-City ports of the northwest, always bustling with repairs, traders, parts exchanges, and much more. The port is a known favorite amongst Moving-City Captains, since Thelyan is known for decisively declining to control any of the Moving-City Roads it has rights to, leaving the city-ships to pass free of taxes and charges, and to only pay for what they need.
Thelyan also has substantial and valuable water mines, red sandstone mines, agriculture, arts and fine craftsmanship, and coffee production.

History

Thelyan is an ancient land with a long history, and was formed in the Ancient Era. It also retains much influence and culture from the Thessian Empire.

The Synd War
Pre-formation, the beginnings of Thelyan lie with the Synd, an outcast tribe of the ancient eastern Thes'set Desert, who had split from their original tribe to pursue more scholarly pursuits and form their own culture.
A central figure of this was Kharaj Thu'Felca, one of the greatest figures of early sand-magic and ist practices, and the founder and leader of the Synd tribe.
Tensions between the Synd and other tribes of the area later led to a long war over territory. The Synd War lasted for a total of 87 years.
Over this period, the Synds were always outnumbered, but wielded superior abilities in magic and agricultural knowledge. They also experienced a rapid cultural growth during this time, whereas their adversaries continued to live as they had for thousands of years, roaming the harsh deserts nomadically and having little interest in new advancements.
These advantages eventually led to a decisive victory by the Synd, who then settled in favorable desertland in the northeastern @Thes, claiming it as their own and founding the country of Thelyan in the Year 3487, Ancient Era.

Territories

Many Thelyani politics and practices are thought to be eccentric to other countries. Where most countries are eager for land expansion and road control, Thelyan is completely unconcerned with such pursuits.

Thelyan does not control any moving-city roads - a conscious decision made by choice. Famously, about a hundred years ago, they moved their borders to abandon their portion of the Redalix Moving-City Road, giving it back, unwanted. As a result, that portion of the Redalix Road is now a rare free road that is not controlled by any country. Though this understandably baffles other lands, Thelyan does not view roads as resources.
In an even more shocking choice, Thelyan is perhaps the only country in the northwest to reject large, desirable pieces of land.
A large portion of land on their northeastern border has long been considered to be Thelyani land by default, but Thelyan has declined ownership of it multiple times. The land, a large stretch of open desert located between Thelyan and Lennar, is called The Thely-Wilds. Despite its disinterest in it, Thely-Wilds is normally assumed to be a part of Thelyan anyway, and many people do not realize that it is actually a separate country.
But most shocking of all is Thelyan's refusal to include the country of Thelsecond, which lies directly to the south, in their borders, instead firmly preferring it to stay a separate country. While the Thely-Wilds is untamed, barely-inhabited desert, Thelsecond is an established country with a very similar culture and landscape to Thelyan. Thelsecond itself has repeatedly professed a desire to be merged into Thelyan, which might be aptly thought of as its richer, more successful cousin. Thelyan's relationship with Thelsecond remain polite, but disinterested. These peculiarities, as well as their focus on libraries and intellectuality, have formed a stereotype that Thelyani people are elitist, snobbish, and oddly regimented and stubborn.
Whatever their exact reasons, Thelyan obviously has no desire to expand its borders, instead choosing to fiercely love every part of its land.

Military

To assume, based upon its scholarly nature, that Thelyan is weak would be a terrible misjudgment. It surprises many people to learn that the land has a powerful military, which uses mainly magic and sorcery, skills in which its citizens show great skill for. The country defends its borders stringently.
Nearly the entire country is surrounded by massive defensive walls.
