Roads of the Greenwood
Roads are a rare piece of infrastructure within the Greenwood. Those indigenous to the region carry an ability to move throughout the dense and at times dangerous forest with ease, a skill that leaves outsiders in complete awe. A distance that typically takes a hunting party of foreigners a week to travel can be covered within a mere two days by the locals. This skill combined with a shockingly low amount of trade between communities within the Greenwood leaves the need for established roads at a minimum.
Additionally, the varied terrain and remoteness of many settlements makes the establishment of such roads a very difficult task. Maintaining such roads also becomes extremely difficult, as high traffic is the only factor that prevents the forest growth from overtaking the roads. Ultimately, outside of the trade-heavy Eastern Greenwood, the only established paths within the wood are a series of footpaths that lead between various settlements.
Eastern Greenwood
The Eastern Greenwood features the most established roads within the Greenwood, serving to support trade between the The Fertile Valley and the Emerald Shores and Isles. Used primarily for transporting food products from the Valley down to the wealthier shorelands, the roads have allowed the town of Aleura to blossom into one of the largest settlements withing the Greenwood, serving as a waypoint between Farmingdale and Crescent City.Harvest Road
Aptly named, the Harvest Road runs west from Farmingdale to Aleura along the ████ River. The Harvest road is a rather plain stretch of road, seeing no lodges or points of interest directly adjacent to the trail.Crescent Road
Stretching north from Crescent City, the Crescent Road reaches up to Aleura along what may be the most interesting stretch of road within the Greenwood. The path to Aleura passes two lodges - the Wayward Arrow and the ████ - along with a number of other points of interest. Between trade and the various points of interest, the Crescent Road is the busiest stretch of road within the Greenwood.Breakwater Trail
The northernmost road in the eastern Greenwood is the Breakwater Trail. Leading from Aleura north to Breakwater Falls, the Trail passes through a significantly denser portion of forest than the other roadways, and features a pair of lodges that provide a significant respite from the dense forest. Wynned's Wayhouse sits near Breakwater Falls, while the Elderfire Lodge lies nearer to Aleura, but sits of the road a bit, requiring a brief trek along a footpath to reach.Hunter's Path
The Hunter's path is the trail made up of the Crescent Road leading from Crescent City to Aleura, and the Breakwater Trail, leading from Aleura to Breakwater Falls. The combined name for the two roads is derived directly from the hunting tourism industry that thrives in the eastern Greenwood. Most hunting parties, especially those with less experience in the forest, will stick to the roads all the way from Crescent City to Breakwater Falls before heading off into the forest. The name Hunter's Path gained widespread use in the region in the 7th century 3E as a means by which to shorten the description of the primary route for hunting parties.Northern Greenwood
The Northern Greenwood region features virtually no eastablished paths - even footpaths. With the relatively flat terrain and prevalence of nomadic communities, the need to establish specific trails is lacking greatly within the region. While a few footpaths lead out of the long-established Estelión, most extend no further than a half day's travel, tailing off into the deeper forest. The lone trail within the Northern Greenwood that continues to a final destination is a footpath leading from Estelión down to the Southern Greenwood.Southern Greenwood
The Southern Greenwood sees a significantly higher number of footpaths than it's northern counterpart. As the sharp elevations created by The Separation have rendered a nomadic lifestyle virtually impossible, nearly all residents of the region live within settlements, increasing the need for consistent travel through the area. The footpaths in the south tend to follow along the rivers of the region, with water travel often being preferred downstream when larger loads of goods or equipment need to travel.Western Greenwood
As the least inhabited region of the Greenwood, the Western Greenwood sees a lack of footpaths similar to the Northern region of the forest. The few footpaths that do exist follow the limited number of rivers in the region, leaving the majority of the terrain often untouched.
