The Quad

The Quad was once a thriving area within San Francisco under the direction of Travel Corp, a megacorporation known for gathering rare resources and bringing those resources back to Earth. In a greedy effort to find ways to transport their off-world colonies to new locations as one whole entity, the Board of Travel Corp (TC) invested billions of dollars into experimental trans-dimensional technologies. They hoped to cut costs and ramp up production time by moving existing settlements from unprofitable planets to ones creating better profits.   However, corporate espionage led their future in a new direction.   In an unscheduled test, Travel Corp's trans-dimensional technology landed The Quad far away. Now, Travel Corp's sin still taints The Quad with the ruins of their tower. The structure is untouched mainly due to the radioactive waves emitting from its husk. It is now a black, unlit reminder towering above the tallest structures, even after losing its top half. Many who were near the tower when the test occurred, what is now called The Great Breach by The Quad, died not long after from exposure. Worse still, the Quad was now at the bottom of a crater, and every night, a fog drifted into the city, bringing creatures of unspeakable horror into The Quad's outer edges. Occasionally, the crater's wind pushes tendrils deeper into the streets to areas it usually does not reach, creating what the residents of The Quald call "The Creep."   Five years have passed, and the people have had a hard life rebuilding what was once a thriving metropolis. There are still pockets here and there within poorer districts that had no means or resources to claw their way back and rebuild. Destroyed cars, buildings, walls, skeletons, and even military equipment may be found long abandoned in these areas.   In the rebuilding, the megacorps secured their own districts, interests, and resources before building the Great Wall. In their shadows, people formed governments to re-establish law and order. Each district now acts as its own micro-city under the influence of its betters, the megacorporations. For survival, each micro-city begs, borrows, and trades valuable resources with one another. Sometimes, they cannibalize those resources to make new ones.   Now, the public network runs on the large radio towers broadcasting spiderweb data from the tallest buildings. Citizens of the quad can access the general internet, TV, and radio, which are all still available. However, corporate data centers and servers are more localized and do not touch this public network for fear of hackers.   The streets are plagued with gangs, local law enforcement blockades, the private military of the megacorps, and operators who are all trying to scrape by. Because of this, many citizens only travel within their district, venturing out as needed or when work becomes available. It is not uncommon for citizens of The Quad to have no idea what is going on with the opposite side of the city unless it makes the news broadcast.

Government

Syndicate

In the wake of the Travel Corp, the megacorps formed the Syndicate. A collective of CEOs who assist in the for-profit nature of their organization and allow resources to trickle down to everyone else.   So far, it seems to be working. For now, a shoestring peace has settled over The Quad in their short reign.

Laws

While each District governs themselves, there are a few common laws that are shared between each.
  • Open carry of weapons is illegal.
  • Hacking is illegal.
  • Theft is illegal.
  • Murder is illegal.
  • Arson is illegal.

Industry & Trade

Cross-district services that are available.

Zephyr:

A flying taxi service that offers fast and convenient transportation across the district that was deemed an Essential Business. The service is operated by a network of autonomous drones, which are controlled by an advanced artificial intelligence named Zephyr. The service is reliable and affordable. The service is accessed through a mobile app, which displays the logo of Zephyr: a stylized blue bird.

Infrastructure

The Great Wall

The Megacorps started the Great Wall construction in 2192, using 3D-printed concrete with a thin sheet of alloy to reinforce the structure. The idea was the wall would cut off the natural airflow, preventing the fog from drifting too easily into the city. Finally, in late 2194, The 20-meter high wall with a depth of 4 meters was constructed surrounding The Quad. While the wall has helped to curb the strange fog that rolls in every night from entering deep into the city, some still spills over it and into the outskirts of The quad.   The areas touched every night are no man's land as the creatures that travel within still appear within The Great Wall. Worse still, there are times when the direction of the air brings the fog deeper to areas where it should not be. The people of The Quad have called it "The Creep."   Between the radiation and the fog, the residents of The Quad now form a doughnut.

Resources

Food
1.42m Kilo-grams of food a month required by 2.6 million people   As the population of San Fran grew and The Quad was being built, vertical Hydroponic & Aeroponic Farms began to tower into the sky to feed the growing population. Some were towering up to 100 floors. Genuine meat products rapidly became a thing of the past as synthetic flavoring was more sustainable than raising animals for food.   The Quad has 14 Hydroponic & Aeroponic Farms built at 50 floors high, each covering half a square kilometer of ground. Each farm produces enough food to feed 250,000 people.   These farms grow vegetables, herbs, fruits, and root plants.
Water
29.5m liters of water per month at 2.6 million people One of the many plans that Travel Corp had was water collection concerns. Atmospheric Water Generation and Rainwater Harvesting were included in the build-out plans of The Quad in several districts for several years before The Great Breach.   They also had water treatment plants that could be quickly converted to desalination should larger bodies of water be found. However, today, The Quad survives predominantly on Water Gen-350s and Water Har-930s, both of which funnel to The Quad's water treatment facilities.
  • Water Gen-350 units produce roughly 125 liters a day, and nearly 6,845 units are installed throughout the city, taking less than 7,000m2.
  • Water Har-930 units produce roughly 1 liter of water per 1mm of rain (per m2). 25% of the City's roofs (181.5 km2 are designed to collect The Quad's 1,090 mm of rain a year.

Power
2,363,400 MWh per month at 2.6 million people After the breakthrough in 2048 in Fusion Energy Sciences, Deuterium-Helium3 (DH) Fusion became the dominant power source for major cities.   The city is powered by four Micro-DH Fusion power plants running eight hours a day, and each produces 20k MWh per day. Each building is a seven-story structure in reinforced concrete that sits 13 meters below ground level and 60 meters above.
Other Materials
Metals, plastics, and other materials are acquired through vigorous recycling and salvaging. This is one of the largest challenges The Quad Faces today for long-term survival. Many materials break down over time and become less usable.   However big of a concern, the citizens of 2195 are focused more on daily survival and not 30-50 years from now. That is a 'future them' problem.

Rockets and Airline flght

The Quad had no airport nor breaching port, as those were within other areas of San Fran.   Without those services, many of the vehicles that could achieve and maintain altitudes over 1000 meters were not around. Those that can reach nearly 1000 meters are few and are kept mainly by the private elite or the Megacorps within the Quad.   With the close, high mountains, limited resources, and constant threat from the fog, air travel and rocket propulsion out of The Quad has taken a back seat.

Guilds and Factions

Architecture

Brutalism is the dominant style of The Quad. The uncolored, blocky concrete buildings are oppressive, even with graffiti tags. Only a few buildings escape into Modernism, but not many.
